File Access

HP Pavilion desktop, Windows 7 Home Prem (64 bit)
Gateway netbook, Windows 7 Home Prem (32 bit)

I use my Gateway netbook when I'm out in the field. Before I go out, I copy
Word files over the wireless network from my HP desktop to the Gateway for
editing throughout the day. When I get home, I then copy them back on to
the HP desktop, overwriting the old ones.

This process has worked with several Windows 7 netbooks (both Starter and
Home Premium editions of Windows 7). However, a couple days ago, when I got
back home and tried to copy the files back on to the HP, I get a pop-up
saying I "Need Permission to Perform This Action", and it just repeats that
pop-up when I click Try Again.

Is there some permission setting I need to check? The necessary folder on
the HP is Shared, both computers are signed in to the same Homegroup, and
both have the same Workgroup name (MSHOME).

All feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Dell.

Are you trying to copy files into a protected area? Win7 tries to protect
us by not allowing data files into areas reserved for the operating system
or applications. We cannot copy files into the Root of any drive (such as
C:\) or into an area restricted to apps, such as C:\Program Files - or into
C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit apps in 64-bit Windows.

Others here know much more than I do about permissions and shares and such,
so I'll let them answer those questions.

You can go to the File Sharing on the share, go to the Advanced button
and see the permissions on the share. It may not be set properly for
user permissions, like using Everyone user group.

Thanks for the replies. I tried leaving the Homegroup and just going back
to regular networking, and everything is fine. This was actually the first
time with several netbooks that I used the Homegroup feature. Sorry I left
that out.
