desktop.ini

I know that if I delete them they will just reform.
Is there a way I can have hidden files visible in the folders but
not having desktop.ini visible on the desktop?
I don't believe so. "Show Hidden Files" is an all-or-nothing, system-
wide proposition, and I don't know of a way to exclude those files. I
wish I could - they annoy me, too.

Not really, but you could move them so they're nearly off the bottom
right corner of the screen ...

I have a new laptop and of course I am configuring it to suit my taste.
One of the things I did is change the folder options so that I can see
hidden system files and the file extensions.

One problem that caused is there is now "desktop.ini" visible on my
desktop. In fact there are 2 !

The first says

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799
[LocalizedFileNames]
CyberLink Media
Suite.lnk=@C:\PROGRA~2\CYBERL~1\MEDIAS~1\MUITRA~1\PSEnvRes.dll,-110

and the other is *different* and says

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

I know that if I delete them they will just reform.

Another thing to try, if you can't successfully ignore them, is to
install Fences and put them into a Fence. Then shrink that fence to very
small.

Great ideas guys!

Anyone know why I have 2 instead of just one?
I also have (or did have) two, but I gave up trying to psych out Windows
7.

I'm not sure of the current status, since I've hidden them from my
sight, probably by sticking them at the bottom a Fences window.

OK, I looked. That is exactly how I hid them, and I do have two of them.

My suspicion: one is for my personal user account and one is for All
Users.

Actually, the properties panel of the second one shows that it's in
C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

Aren't you glad you asked?

I believe it's because our view of "The Desktop" is really a composite
of the one in our profile, plus the one for All Users. That's why you
sometimes get asked, when installing an application, whether you want
to create a shortcut for only you, or for everybody. Both the Desktop
and the Start Menu are similar in that regard. There are two
desktop.ini files, one from your profile and one from All Users.

C

Ah, but I want to see them.
It sounds like you want to see SOME of the hidden files, but not all
of them. Like others have said, I don't think you can do that via the
standard GUI options. The show/hide options aren't that granular.

That could be. I still think some program just stuck them there "in
passing" and they don't really do anything. The other thing is a program
used a command window and it didn't get cleaned up ?
Everything is just a guess because it happens so fast.

desktop.ini files belong to Windows, which complains if you try to
delete one.

On occasion I have deleted one or another of them, but they always come
back, like the cat in the song, or my creditors.

But when I did delete one, nothing bad ever seems to have happened.

To be perfectly clear: I have no idea what they're good for :)

They hold customization information, like if you change the
Customize options to something other than the default. It has other
more obscure directions, too. I'm just now looking at one of mine,
and I'm surprised to see:

============

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799
[LocalizedFileNames]
Norton Internet Security.lnk=@C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~2\Branding\muis.dll,-102
WildTangent Games App - hp.lnk=@C:\PROGRA~1\WILDTA~1\TOUCHP~1\hp\MUILink.exe,-105
WildTangent Games App - wildgames.lnk=@C:\PROGRA~1\WILDTA~1\TOUCHP~1\WILDGA~1\MUILink.exe,-105

============

Surprised because one of the first things I did when I got this
netbook about 3 years ago, was to remove all Norton and Wildtangent
products. So why are they still mentioned in this file?!?

Because when you tell Norton to delete itself, it doesn't completely do
so. You have to download a program from the Norton website which will
remove all traces of Norton from your system. Wildtangent may need
further investigation and registry hacking, as a lot of games programs
leave stuff all over your system when you remove them.

The links you gave look like links to icons, for what it's worth.

I agree with KenW; I deleted them from both my Win7 machines and my Vista
laptop, and they haven't showed up again. Whether or not UAC has anything to
do with it or not, I don't know, but I have it turned off on all three of my
machines. The only other thing it might be that keeps them from coming back
could possibly be Classic Shell, but I looked and didn't see any specific
setting to hide only the Desktop ones (or any of them for that matter). I
think a simple deletion took care of them.

So, one might expect to find multiple desktop.ini files when there are
multiple users with their unique profiles. I wonder what happens in a
corporate environment with many potential users, and network based user
profiles. When I read the thread, I had visions of a display filled with
nothing but desktop.ini icons. Ecch!
