Desktop Icons

How do I get the system to remember the placing of desktop icons. I move
them about, but when the system restarts, they revert to the original
positions!

Aha! A question I can answer, but I hope the real pros here have a better
one. I've lurked here since day one, just waiting for something I might be
able to help with!

FENCES

According to Microsoft, the best way to hold icons in place is to use
fences. I can't tell you where I read it, but somewhere it is stated that
fences were the way to go. I use Stardock fences and I love it. I can
organize and group icons to my hearts content. And it's free!

Good luck.

Right click on desktop/view/

see.. auto arrange icons and align icons to grid. Make sure these are
not ticked.

I guess I'll have to look into that. When I switch between my notebook
screen, and my 22" widescreen, my icons get scrambled. Maybe there's
something in Windows to fix that, but it isn't a big enough deal for me to
spend time trying to address it.

You might also want to look at this location:

http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/967108.htm

There is a Desktop Save and Restore function that works within Windows 7.

Adds a Save and Resotre function to the right click menu on the desktop.

I use it to save what my desktop looks like and when the Icons get
messed up, I use the restore to put them right back how they were. Nice.

All I can tell you is that I am running Windows 7 Professional and have
been using it since the beginning. Do make sure you get the correct
version if you get it. There is a 32 bit and also a 64 bit version.

Has worked great for me and I don't have to worry about getting icons
back where they were.

Drag them to desired positions, right click on desktop, select view, then
arrange to grid. Another way is to right cick on desktop, then arrange by
name.

Plus you can set it so that when you double click on a empty part of your
desktop, it will then hide all of your icons. A nice feature so that one
can enjoy their wallpapers without having icons obstructing them.

Another feature of Fences is that you can create custom arrangements for
different screen resolutions. Fences is worth looking into IMHO.

You might want to try "Fences."
This program will allow you to segment your desktop into
specific areas and place your icons in them. It will also allow you to take
many desktop snapshots and restore them, if needed. I've been running
it on Win7 Ultimate for several months, now.

I haven't heard of that before. It sounds like a nice option.

Sorry to intrude, but are there any programmers here that knows the
finer differences between VS2008 Pro and VS2008 Standard?
Websites that I have found pretty much recommend going with the standard
if one doesn't need to program for MS Office environment.

Why would you hide a question like that in a totally unrelated thread
such as this one? More people will see it, and thus you're in a better
position to receive a good answer, if you start your own thread.
Thanks.

I usually ask people that may know something. I got an excellent answer
from relic, whom I've also asked the same question.
