Copying cripples Windows

Fokke Nauta

Hi all,

W7 Pro 64b.
When I start my PC to get working, the first thing I do is copy a few
cells in Excel. Once I've done that, Excel freezes and there's nothing I
can do but kill the application. It happens in Excel 2003 as well as 2010.
When I copy tekst from Word to Notepad, the same thing happens and I can
kill Notepad. When I copy tekst from Notepad into an HTML editor, the
same thing happens again and I can kill the HTML editor.
This can go on for minutes and all of a sudden it works again, and I can
work for the rest of the day.
This happens very frequently and is very annoying.

I don't think it's Windows, as it also happened a few times in the days
that my PC was running with XP. But now it happens very frequently.

What can it be? Memory problem? CPU?
Any recognizes this or has an idea as to what it may cause?

Thanks in advance.

I'd run memtest86 to check out your RAM chips. It does sound like a memory
issue.

Thanks. That's what I thought as well. I downloaded the memtest86 iso
image and burned it to a cd. I will run the memory test overnight.
Tomorrow I'll have more information.

Have you checked Event Viewer ? There could be an error
message waiting for you in there.

Have you launched Task Manager, then copy some cells while
watching the Task Manager display ? See if Task Manager updates,
and has the name of a process for you to consider.

Good idea. Haven't thought of that yet.
I checked but couldn't find anything on the time it happened.

I'll check this the next time it happens.

If Office 2007/2010 is installed, change the printer to Send To One Note...then test if the Excel problem continues.

Sure. The HP3650 as a network printer.

Last night I left the memtest86 running.
Result: 7 passes, no errors.

The problem is not related to Excel alone, it happens with all
applications. Apart from that, the network HP printer is not the default
printer. The default printer is PDF maker. Ofcourse I could change that
to Sent to One Note, but that wouldn't be the solution for this problem
with other applications. The problem is system wide.

There is a discussion of this problem here:

Solutions range from changing printer, un protecting worksheet to
changing user id. I have the same problem in access. You would
think
that microsoft could get its programs to work with windows. By far I
have more problems with microsoft application than all other vendors
combined.
Did you ever think it might be you?

I have had a bunch of Windows machines, and very, very few problems.
Usually "pilot error".

Try to refrain from deleting files you know nothing about, and
changing settings you know nothing about.

I had an acquaintance like you who couldn't seem to resist changing a
bunch of settings, and then whine like you, about all the "problems"
his machine was giving him.

Maybe you should try your hand at brain surgery or Nuclear physics or
something else you know nothing about and leave your machine alone.

When you say "nothing I can do", do you just mean (in this case) nothing
you can do _in Excel_, i. e. you can do other things, or do you mean the
machine is almost unusable at all, and you can just about manage to kill
Excel (or whatever the target application is)?

Have you observed anything that seems to happen coincident with it
starting to work?

If you turn the PC on but leave it for a few minutes before doing
anything, is the problem still present?

Do you get it only at on, or also at (say) recover from hibernation?

Have you noticed it varying with temperature (or is your home pretty
constant)?

have you checked the resources manager as to what its happening.

Could be the NET Framework application which starts on bootup.

No, only the application in which I try to copy freezes. All other
applications or folders that are running, keep working.

No, nothing.

I will do this next time.

I don't use hibernation but standby sometimes. But at the end of the day
I shut down my PC completely. So it the morning there is always a fresh
start. And this problem only happens in the morning. After some time all
of a sudden my PC works normally again, and it stays so for the rest of
the day.
Have you noticed it varying with temperature (or is your home pretty

Our home is pretty constant, but perhaps the problem dissapears when the
temperature in my PC rises after it has been switched on.

When you type "resource" in the start search box, does it show up ?

It can be launched from inside Task Manager somewhere.

But it can also be launched separately. Try typing "resource" and
see what shows up.
