Clicking on links in email and usenet........... (problem #1)

V

Valorie *~

Clicking on links in email and in Usenet messages no longer works. I get an
error: "There was a problem sending the command to the program." There are
no error numbers. Just text. Anyone know how or if this can be fixed?
This is WM, not WLM with the proper dll for W-7 64-bit.

Thanks but I don't have the time to look through thousands and thousands
of posts there for this problem.
Who said look? Is there some reason you can't make the same post there
as you made here. It's a simple copy/paste.

I don't have a live ID, whatever the hell that is, and I can't reset my
password there. The few times I've posted on that kind of forum I never did
find the replies. I've mentioned that before here. That's why I ask on
Usenet.

This is what I got at that site:

A Windows Live ID is an ID you can use with Windows Messenger, the chat
program. But it also can be used to log into other Microsoft based
services, such as MSDN and Technet, Hotmail and so on. It used to be
called Passport but morphed into Windows Live ID.

Typically, the user name part of the ID is an email address e.g.
(e-mail address removed) and the password is just that, a password e.g.
uyd2yfbhdy

I have one so that people who want to add me to Messenger as friends can
do so. The thing spreads out quite a bit these - you can hook yourself
up to Microsoft based services and also to things like Facebook and,
say, your WordPress Blog. My friends can start their copy of Messenger
and from that program learn if I have posted a new blog entry, or new
pictures on Facebook all from that one program without having to visit
each particular website each time they want to find out.

Have you tried re-installing Mozilla? This is an application problem, not a
Windows problem.

I remember Passport. I never used any of those things.

Gotcha! :)

It was a MS update problem. Once the new updates were deleted, both
problems went away.

Applies to both email and links in IE. Follow the instructions
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm

I can't do anything with IE since the buttons in other versions of IE are
not there in my version on IE on W-7. The Help button is gone. I don't know
where MS hid them. There is no "Tools" button and other things on the top
of the window, and no information on how to find them there. Right clicking
does not bring them up so IE is not usable for me. There is a lot of crap
on the top bar of IE such as Ebay, Weather and other useless stuff but none
of the old useful buttons. BTW, do you know where MS hid the "Tools" menu?

I'm using MozillaFF with ABP ad-blocker.

I'm curious, Valorie: Do you read this group, or only post
questions and wait for resplies to only your questions? I'd suggest
that you read everything, ignoring what is of no interest to you, and
learning from others who answer questions you may not have even thought
of yet.

I have a folder set up into which I put all comments here that
are of interest to me ... and I don't even have a Win7 machine. ;)

Here's the answer to your question which Ken Blake posted on
September 20, 2010:

[my post] "A quick way to get those File, View, Edit, menus back in
Win-7 is to just hit the Alt key. It's a toggle. Hit it again, and
those menus disappear. I can't imagine life without them. ;)"

[Ken's clarification] "That's the temporary way to get it. To put it
there permanently (and like you, I always want it there), on the
toolbar click Organize | Layout | Menu bar.

As read a much as possible, not just replies to my questions. I've lurked,
as time permitted, on many of the MS NGs over the years. I also get Smart
Computing magazine and try to keep up as much as possible.

Thank you. That worked. :) I'm sure I miss replies and some relevant
posts since these free NSPs don't always pick up every post to Usenet. I
also try and read too much when I'm tired and I'm sure I forget some
important information and advice.

There is no "Organize" on the IE toolbar. Where is it on your version of
IE in W-7? Right clicking the bar doesn't bring it up nor does hitting Alt
key.

There's a bunch of crap on the IE toolbar I believe was added by HP. It
can't be removed. I tried everything I could think of. It's another reason
I use MozillaFF.

Could very well be.
It can't be removed.
I'd bet it can.

We don't know what you tried because we don't know what you could
think of. We also don't know any of the specific results you saw from
your attempts because you didn't share them.
It's another reason I use MozillaFF.
You probably mean Firefox. I use it, too.

I found a way to get rid of some of them. I dragged them to the
desktop..... then dumped them in the Recycle bin. :^)

Yep, Fire Fox. Even my husband switched to FF.
