Hey there my PC has had a bad issue of randomly black screen crashing while playing games or occasionally it crashes while watching Youtube or using google maps.

The PC will randomly lock up and occasionally hang on a sound making quite a loud burring noise. Usually black screen, no BSOD message. If you leave the PC without hard resetting it it will reset by itself only minus the screen showing ( i can hear the startup windows sound and if i type my passowrd in blind it will log in)

Eventviewer consistantly shows messages right before the ID 41 for kernel power loss, 10 secs or so before hand i get an error for filter manager

Sad thing is im not getting DMP files and i have already had those settings enabled. I have event viewer logs and thats it really.

its not a blue screen with an error but it is a black screen crash so i figured this would be the place to go

Has this always been a problem or is it a recent change? If recent then have you changed any hardware, software, or system settings? What are you doing when the problem occurs? Is it a graphic intensive game?

It's possible your power supply is too small or going bad. Your video card requirements only say 500W is needed but if you have lots of hard drives, etc, 550W could be insufficient.

On the other hand it could be the sleep and power settings.

Start by making sure you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard. This only takes about 20 seconds but it very important you do not loose power during that time. BIOS updates often include changes for ACPI which is the power stuff for sleep/hibernate.

Next is the actual sleep settings: go to control panel > power options and under advanced settings set the hard disk to never sleep and under sleep turn off those items. A fix for some machines is an entry under sleep for "hybrid" sleep; not allowing hybrid sleep solves problems for some computers. If the problem stops then it is most likely related to something sleeping which shouldn't really sleep; if that is the case you can slowly turn things back on to allow some sleep until you find which one seems to affect you.

Updating your drivers could also help, see if there is a never video driver for your GPU.

Haha Alllright lemme chew through this.

This has been a problem for the longest time. It started almost a year ago when i played alot of Minecraft (with alot of mods so it was intensive) i would get random BLUE SCREEN crashes.
Things generally became better overtime to my memory but here was always the occasional crash, i put it down to various things (over heating, bad drivers, PSU, Sound drivers)

I eventually threw in the gauntlet and reinstalled windows clean (deleting 8 years of saved content in the process) and it seemed to be okay aaand then again Crash crash crash crash crash

Did i mention that the computer restarts when it crashes only it refuses to show anythig on the screen, the speakers still play login music lol

Annnyways where was i.... have always was worried about my PSU the poor old thing came with my case when i got this PC a good 3 years back on another forum we checked the rails underuse and the only problem i can see is that the 12v rail dips to about 11.8 sporadically.
I have 2 HDDs one 1 TB and a smaller older 120GB. The PSU i can purchase today i have a 650 Modular Corsair lined up but i'd rather try and pin point this problem before spending my somewhat limited money supply.

The game it crashes most on is League of Legends which is not that intensive at all, it has crashed on other games but nowhere near the extent it does on league (that being said i dont play alot of other games so its hard to judge)
it has crashed on youtube vidoes and twitch streams in the past.

I have done some research myself and noticed that i had a AODoverdrive or something showing errors in my event viewer. After some googling some people suggested removing ALL traces of AMD GPU drivers from your computer (incluiding registry and hidden folders) and then reinstalling a much much older version of the driver and then only instlaling the driver only and not the catalyst accompanying software and all the bullshit addons.

Soo basically untill i hear from you again i will "bug test" by playing league all day untill it crashes if it does crash i will then see if my BIOS needs updating try that and then continue to "bug test"

Sorry for the lengthy reply i just want as much information out as possible. This has been happening for a while and because im a IT technician i was too stubborn to ask for help so im glad i finally posted.

Cheers Ratio

Well I don't think running old drivers is normally a good idea but using the latest video driver while avoiding the CCC portion is worth trying.

LoL can definitely cause problems so make sure you have the latest patches installed (4.1.4 ?)

And the PSU was just a possibility, based on specs it should work but I don't know. If you buy a 650W, from a store where you can return it if it doesn't fix the problem, that might be worth trying as well.

Unfortunately a lot of this is trial and error.

Do you have any power loss warnings in the event logs?

Yeh well i get a Evnt ID 41 in event viewer when i crash but i dont know if thats power loss.

I played 4 games since i wrote that reply and havent crashed yet. I checked Hw Monitor and my 12v Rail goes to 11.9 when im gaming.

But yeh so far no crashes so i havent even had a chance to update my BIOS i DID however do those sleep settings you suggested.

I'd suggest keeping it like that a while and see how it goes.

Ok well i cant recall how long it has been since i last posted but basically i figure ill close this thread out now

Sooo since i had rewound the drivers back to 13.3 and removed all the CCC bullshit League has not crashed once!

I wanna thank some random from a random forum that i cant recall any details of for the fix suggestion it was just crazy enough to work

So yeh if anyone in the future is having the same issue hopefully this is helpful. Thanks Trainableman for all your help

Just out of interest did you look in the following directory for crash dump files:
c:\Windows\Live KernelReports\WATCHDOG

There is no WATCHDOG file in there. How do i make this file exist any info i can get on why this happened the better.

Also i just came off an extensive session of 7 days to die while hosting a local server and after almost 12 hours no crash, usually it would happen more frequently if i was watching youtube, twitch or on tinychat on the other screen but not any more.

I just wish i could somehow deliver my fix to everyone else i have seen who has this problem

Mate,

All good.
It seems to be a common fault with AMD video cards at the moment.
Release 13.x seemed to be the most stable driver.

Ok so im not sure if i am meant to bump this or make a new post but the issue has started again.

Not when playing League of Legends but now when i try to play a game called factorio it will now crash rather frequently, i am usually playing a Youtube video on my second screen.
I can find any info on why it crashes other then what Event viewer tells me.

I know when i thought i had this fixed i was able to play game like Factorio and 7 Days etc fine

Sure have im just going through programs i have put on since changing the drivers.

Also in evnet viewer i get a AODoverdirve error around about the same time it crashes

It happened quite frequently yesterday. Even happening while viewing Youtube videos and flash streams.

I have another theory it has something to do with utorrent as when i am downloading at abround 500kb/s my computer makes the same locking up noise it usually makes when it dies, only it recovers and continues. These sounds also happen when i install drivers.

Today i have played a coupley games of league and just had an extensive 5 hour session on the Sims 4 and no crashes whatsoever, i also was watching a rugby game in flash on my other screen

Its just so frustrating because
A) i cant replicate this for the life of me. When i had frequent crashes in Factorio i changed the game to windowed and the crashes stopped. besides that i cant recreate it whatsoever.
B) I cant find any info or crash dump relating to this.

Have you tried disabling the onboard Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3000 graphics?
It may say that it disables the integrated video anyway if another GPU is found, but I would suggest that you go in to the BIOS and disable it anyway.
