Backing Up Windows XP Computer

I am so anxious to upgrade my XP Laptop to a Windows Laptop. I know that I have to back up my XP laptop before I load Windows 7 files I plan on backing up to USB stick drive. How exactly do I back up my XP files to my USB drive? After I copy the Windows System files, will the computer allow me to delete the Windows XP System files?

get a win7 install disc and make a clean install on the win7 laptop don't try to copy system files doesn't work win7 is 64bit old xp is 32bit
