    Reasons why 128bit might flop

I agree that capacity was a big part of it and the reliability of the media. That is why I keep my old Apple II floppy disk and Apple IIe computers in a hermetically sealed box until I someone creates a CDROM or USB interface for that old great stuff! Eunix

    Reasons why 128bit might flop

Q: what exactly do you mean by 128 bit processor or for GP use? This could mean a lot of things and in many cases an advertized 128-bit processor (Sony Playstation 3) on really works in a 64-bit address range. Please clarify a bit. Thanks,

    Reasons why 128bit might flop

XP does support floppy drives. You just have to put it on a machine that has a floppy in it which would be an older machine. I have had XP installed on IBM Thinkpads T21,T23, Dell C640 all with Floppy Disk and even a Gateway Solo 9550 with Super Floppy...Not a problem. I also disagree that...

W7 general performance on older machines

Ok Catilley, I went and borrowed an old C640 from a friend for a few weeks just to see what you are seeing. I put W7 Ultimate on it and tured AERO off. In my opinion, the machine is barely tolerable. I had to download Chrome as the web browser which is more responsive than Firefox right...

W7 general performance on older machines

If you notice the 3.6 rating is based on the "Calculations Per Second" which is processor. The rating is helped out by the video card which is a X600 which was the high end for this version of the D810. The other item is that I upgraded the hard drive a few years back to a 7200 rpm 100G...

Would It be worth installing windows 7 on an old machine?

I am going to put my 2 cents in. I don't think it is worth putting 7 on an older machine. I am currently writing from a Dell D810 that I put 7 on and the performance is really pissing me off. I also borrowed a C640 from a friend and put W7 Ultimate on and it is currently going through the...

Hey, I would like to get an update on how your machine is working out! eunix

W7 general performance on older machines

Awesome! I am glad that you made it through it - especially the dual boot. I take it that you are using the W7 boot loader and having it load the older nt boot loader for the Win 2K pro. I would like to hear how you managed the small system partition that W7 wants to create during the...

W7 general performance on older machines

If I were you, I would not waste my time on a C640. You will find the Pentium 4 and 1 Gig memory limit a little underwhelming. That machine will better serve you with XP or 2000 if you still have a copy of that. It makes a great Ubuntu or Puppy machine also. I tested Vista on one of those...

W7 general performance on older machines

Catilley, Thanks for the update on the D610. I had one for years for work and I have to say that it was a workhorse of a machine and why I bought a couple of D810s. Here are my W7 performance numbers for the D810/2G/7200rpm disk : Although the W7 perf rating is 3.6 and the X600...

W7 general performance on older machines

Hi everyone, I loaded one of my older machines with W7 that previously had XPpro on it and I wanted to generate some discussion on the overall performance on older machine to see how others feel about it. I put W7 on a Dell D810 with an upgraded 7200rmp 160G HD and 2 Gig of ram. I had...

how do I switch from 64 to 32 bit version of Windows 7

Get off the Linux tip - It is great that Linux comes first for a change! :) I am a little bit confused. I have Vista 64 on a couple of machines , Linux (both 32 and 64bit kernels) XP 32 and 64 and W7. and have not had a problem with Adobe on either version (32/64bit) of IE or Firefox...

W7 Ultimate as the OS - Help Please

By filing a dispute with your CC company, you should be able to get the charges reversed. You will probably have to leave the machine untouched while you work through the issues. If you bough the machine based on a web ad or configuration, you can save it as a PDF and then scan your delivery...

    W7 Clean Install -

Saying Goodbye! Ok. I have put my old disk back in and it is going to be difficult saying goodbye to an old friend. I am going to load Norton Ghost 10 (since I already have it) and make an image disk of the machine in the event that I want to recover it. Now what I would really like to do...

    W7 Clean Install -

Ok. I am almost finished with my trial. I took some time to study my disk utilizaton on the 100G XP drive and now that I am comfortable with W7 running on my D810 machine, I am going to move the data of and partition the drive differently. I am going to do a clean install on the new drive and...
