I use Suddenlink, which is unfortunately the only cable provider in my area, so it was either this, 56k, or some wireless AT&T DSL bullshit. It started out as 6 Mbps up and half a meg down, but recently the connection was upgraded without charge to 10 Mbps down and 1 meg up, which has made a huge difference.

Officially, I pay $56/month for 6Mbit/1Mbit cable. Unofficially, I get closer to 9/2 on most days, but sometimes as low as 2/256k when things are bad.

I also get very unpredictable latency performance, particularly in the late evenings. I also cannot change ISPs, as Comcast is the only one that was willing to wire my apartment complex. Thanks, Comcast.

Is it common that there is only one ISP that you can use in the US?

In the UK there are only a handful of cable providers which you can use, however ADSL broadband is open to 100's of providers which anyone can use with their normal phone line. Over here ADSL tends to be a max speed of 24Mbps (often people only have 8Mbps though, as it's cheaper) and Cable tends to be up to 50Mbps.

In a home, it's uncommon to have more than about 5 ISPs: 2 cable, 3 xDSL. Apartments are limited by whomever was willing to actually wire the apartment.

DSL speeds in the States are much lower than what I had in Europe. For decent speed you need cable or fiber optics.
