I dual-boot XP and W7. I have a single HDD divided into 3 partitions: XP
in one, W7 in another, and the third is common data. Both XP and W7 can
"see" all partitions. Each OS is on it's C drive, the other OS is on the
E drive, and the common data is on the D drive.
A friend has a similar set-up with XP and W7 in separate partitions, but
neither OS can "see" the other partition. The W7 disc manager shows the
XP partition area and can assign a drive letter to it, but W7 itself
doesn't see it at all, much less assign a drive letter.
Is there some magic incantation required?

This can happen if you haven't assigned letters in the Windows Disk
Management.
Computer right click, Manage/ Disk Management. Assign letters.
