My Win7 WLM has got a default NEWS-server: Microsoft Communities,
which they've named "msnews.microsoft.com".

Is this server login & password free?

If not, how do you use it?

== TIA

It is never updated. Microsoft had abandoned news for web forums
despite us Usenet users.

You don't. That's an old address that is no longer valid. Microsoft
dismantled their nntp news service and servers. They only use web
forums now.

Some of the newsgroups they started continue to live on in usenet and
are still active.

Hi, Anonymous.

As the others said, Microsoft shut down that news server about a year ago,
despite howls of protest from me and MANY others. My ISP and its news
service provider (Giganews?) still carry thousands of the
no-longer-supported microsoft.public.* newsgroups; several free news servers
still carry those NGs, too.

The reason you still see the MS nws server as a default in WLM is probably
because you are running an outdated version of WLM. Your message headers
say:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 14.0.8089.726

That is WLM 14, aka Wave 3, aka WLM 2009. Many users prefer that version to
the current build of WLM 2011 (see my Sig) because it does a better job of
quoting the prior thread - and they don't like the Ribbon UI in WLM 2011.
The choice is yours; Winston has posted "how to..." get either version
several times in this newsgroup and in
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop and other places.
