Windows Process Explorer

I have installed the Windows Process Explorer, both in an XP machine and
my new Windows 7 box instead of Task Manager. In the XP machine, it
puts a small black square in the lower right hand tray at boot up.
Painted in the black square is the always changing CPU usage graph. In
W7 it doesn't put anything into the tray until you 1st ask for "Task
Manager". Then is put a gray square with the CPU usage for a few
seconds and then, the little square remains blank, no mater what the
usage happens to be. Any ideas why this is not working correctly? Could
it be something to do with the Classic look that I've invoked?

Try this. Click the up arrow in the system tray and select "Customize."
Look for the Process Explorer icon and select "Show icon and notification."

I don't have Process Explorer installed, but this sounds like the sort
of behavior you get when an icon is set to "Show notifications only."

What is the "up arrow in the system tray"? In my system, there
apparently isn't any. But, I think I found the area you mentioned and
it IS set for "Show icons and notifications". Also, I forgot to mention
about the blank square icon for Process Explorer. Once Process Explorer
is launched and minimized to the System Tray (blank icon), if you hover
over it, it does display CPU and Interrupt percentages. My problem is
that in XP it worked properly. An icon was always in the System Tray
right after boot, if you set it up that way. And, it always showed, at
a glance, what was going on with CPU usage.

Sorry. That was my best shot. I have never used Process Explorer. And
the up arrow may be a result of using Classic Windows theme with the
Classic Shell application.

If you set up the Task Bar to hide some icons, the up arrow at the left
side of the System Tray/Notification Area appears and exposes the hidden
icons.

You set that up by right clicking in the Task Bar, choosing the Taskbar
tab of the resulting pop-up menu, and clicking Customize in the middle
of the pane (in the "Notification area" area).
