I wonder if anyone knows how to rotate the picture by 90 degrees in the
Windows Media Player? I have been sent some small movies taken with a
cell phone, I think, and I cannot find out how tho view them properly.
The files have extension .mov.

I don't know if WMP has that capability built in, but most video
drivers support screen rotation - you essentially rotate the entire
screen.

Control-Alt and Up arrow, left arrow, right arrow, down arrow, etc.
Left rotates left, right right, up back up, etc.

When I had a similar problem I had to rotate my screen - no, not the
monitor :-)

In my current case, with an nVidia video card, I bring up the nVidia
Control Panel, find Rotate Screen, click there, and voilà, I can make
the video look great.

My older video card had hot keys, like Ctrl-Alt-Left Arrow or some
such, but not this one.

Why I had to do it this way: one of my video players lets me rotate the
picture, but it doesn't rotate the display box, so heads and feet get
cut off ;-)

BTW, when the screen is rotated, trying to use the mouse will probably
drive you crazy, unless you're a much calmer person than I am :-)

Along the general wth display theme--
In the win 3.1 days, there was a key sequence on many desktops that
caused the display to mirror image. It usually occurred when a fast two
handed typist hit about three keys at the same time. We never figured
out if it was a result of keyboard circuitry, a driver, or an obscure
key sequence that was not well documented.

A Google search:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%2Brotate+%2Bvideo

found:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rotate-video-files-mac-pc/

If the video editors mentioned in the above article do not handle .mov
files, convert them to something they do support. FormatFactory is a
good audio/video converter.

If viewing is all you need..you might try adding the video to Movie Maker or Windows Live Movie Maker..either will allow it to be
rotated and viewed without having to create a project.

Optionally, to echo and add to other responses...third party players are available that can perform a rotate task.

Thank you Gene and everyone. I agree that trying to use the mouse on a
rotated screen *does* drive me nuts. Perhaps, I may be able to train
myself or use Mousekeys but I haven't got the hang of that yet. However,
for these little *short* movies unless I want to save them, turning my
head sideways seems a solution.

Thanks for the suggestion of Movie Maker. It's a bit of a chore to save
the little file and open Movie Maker but it does work.
