I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Lately, every time I try to laumch a
video file using WMP, I get "Windows Media Player Has Stopped Working". I]m
given no option but to close the program. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks.

Not really! But, have you tried any of the various repair or Microsoft
"fixit" methods/utilities?
My preferred player is VLC media player. Got tired of messing with the
win media player several win versions ago.

Seconded. VLC just works, with 'most anything I throw at it. (And the
play-at-different-speed-without-changing-the-pitch works amazingly well,
too.)

One of the special properties of WMP that must be maintained
(in Microsoft's view of the world), is valid and working DRM.

In this thread, you can see attempts by a user, to get WMP working
again.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...d-dfcf399bd116

The more complex the mechanisms used to maintain working DRM
and restrict what you can do with media, the more likely
it is to run into "Windows Media Player Has Stopped Working".
On the surface, it would appear pretty simple, to write a program
to read a media file and play it. But when it's armed to the teeth
with functions you can't see, and one of those breaks, then
look out.

Your first step, would be to examine Event Viewer, and
see what kind of errors are logged there.

"Log Name: Application
Event ID: 1000
Description:
Faulting application name: wmplayer.exe,
version: 12.0.7600.16667,
time stamp: 0x4c7dc5a1 "

Thanks for the tip. I am also fed up with fighting Windows Media
player and Winamp has also been giving me problems. I have installed
the VLC player and will test it later today.

I can't stand WMP, always have. I refuse to use it.

I prefer Foobar2000 for audio and Media Player Classic for video.
Between the two of them they can play just about anything. I don't like
VLC much, either (I don't like the interface and it's slow to start up)
but I keep it around for the rare time when my preferred players have
trouble with something.)

Do you have Adobe Flash 10? Uninstall it and see if that fixes the problem.

Don't know about the Windows Media problem, but just recently
downloaded and installed the VLC media player and am delighted with
it. It works a whole lot better than Windows Media player, it's free
and can be downloaded from CDNET.

It's always best to download a program from the original source. In
this case:
