In Windows Live Mail not Windows Mail you can set it to check for new mail every x minutes.
Is there an option "check for new mail now"? I could swear blind I used to be able to do it in my older version of Live when used on XP. One of the reasons I "hacked" my older live version to force Windows into thinking it had the latest version installed.
