Hi,
I recently (11-07-20120) had some updates download through windows update and now the o.s. will only start in safe mode. When I try to start in normal mode it goes to a black screen.
Things I tried are;
  • system restore
  • system recovery
o.s. is 64 bit windows 7 ultimate, 6Gig Ram, Dell computer desktop.

appreciate any help, would prefer not to reload windows.

It may have been a WAT update. Are you sure the black screen is not a warning that your activation key is not valid? If it is then there will be a note in the corner saying "Windows is not genuine".

It may also have been a video driver update but if that were the case then a system restore to before the updates should have fixed it and you say it didn't.

Sorry, this is an old link, nobody can hold their breath that long.

In case trouble after a few days/nights frustration, I do a Windows UPGRADE (Not re-install nor Repair).

In your case, a Repair may do the trick, that is faster.

It takes many hours but that is the last resort before re-format and re-install OS and all the software.
