I'm about to buy an el-cheapo laptop just for
Internet downloads, thereafter to transfer all
suitable and screened material to my main
computer.
http://www.asusnotebook.com.au/eee-pc.php

It comes with "Windows7 Starter" and I assume this
will be compatible with my Windows7 Ultimate 64bit
machine? It's going to cost $370 so I want to
get it right.

Peter

1. Looks like 417.90 to me from that link?
2. If it really is just for downloading stuff - I presume you are doing
this as a (slightly unusual, but each to his own) way of protecting your
main computer (does that not go online at all? Does it have any
antimalware features?) - then I'd say why not get a secondhand machine,
possibly XP or even one of the Linux ones. Would be much cheaper.

All the data files will be compatible, but Starter version is missing a
lot of the stuff that the better versions have which makes Windows 7
more usable. The deficiencies can be mostly rectified by third party
software and a bit of ingenuity, but the good news is that it supports
Window Anytime Upgrade, which lets you buy a decent version over the
internet, for slightly more extra cost than the version with it already
installed.

If you can find a laptop with Home Premium installed at about the same
price, you'd be better off with that.

I have the 1015px-8U17 and it came with 2gig ram and home prem. and a
dual core Atom processor.

I have seen the ads that say it comes with starter and other ads that say
home prem. , but most ads say starter.

I got it from Amazon.

I also have a Toshiba netbook which has a ton of useless utilities and
the Asus is much better.

I personally have an ACER netbook that came with win7 starter. Dual core
1.6 Atom 350gb hard drive and 1gb RAM (which I upgraded to 2gb) - which I
got from the local Fred Meyer store for $200. win7 is so slow on it I
could not stand it, so installed Debian - runs quite nicely.

File transfer capability should not be a concern either way.

I'm typing right now on an HP Mini 110 netbook that came with, and is
still running Windows 7 Starter. I originally planned to upgrade it to
one of the higher versions, but as it turned out, Starter Edition
supports everything I want this particular computer to do, so there it
will probably stay.

1.6 atom vs my 3.4 gig 64 bit desktops 8 gig ram, yes slow.

All things considered, not bad speed.

Try MicroCenter.com
Laptops with Win 7 Home Premium for around $250 up (new and refurbished
name brands). I go a Win 7 Pro upgrade for around $120 (on sale).
I bought one (an Acer) and am very happy with it.

Thanks, the Wikipedia chart is a great help.
