Sounds like that PC expert is a complete douche bag. Kick him to the curb.

Yup! The beta version was set to start shutting down hourly last year. I
don't recall the exact date. This was well advertised by MS so that
those testing it would purchase and install the retail version when it
was released or revert back to their original os. By the way, the beta
version is not readily upgradeable to any of the retail versions. A
fresh install is required.

Yes, the public Windows 7 Release Candidate was designed to expire on
June 1st, and to start shutting down every two hours, beginning on March
1st.

It's time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...candidate.aspx

Your friend needs to purchase and install a legitimate license for
Windows 7, or any other OS of her choice.

As others have mentioned the beta versions may do what your describe but
most of them are set for a two hour shutdown from what I've read.

There is another way for the computer itself to shutdown based on
settings in the BIOS, if her motherboard has the options.

Some motherboards can be told to power off based on a timer. One easy
way to check this with out having to go through all the BIOS settings is
to boot one of the free Live Linux boot cd/DVD's. Then just leave the
system up for an hour or two and see what happens. If the system still
shutdowns then it's time to dig into the BIOS, if not then it may be a
bogus Windows 7 or a real weird power saver setting shutting down the
system. You can download a live Linux CD image at:
http://www.livecdlist.com/

If her system does not have a CD/DVD drive then Puppy Linux can be
installed on a USB drive using the UNetbootin program. It can be found
at: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
and is freeware.

I would suggest using Puppy Linux due to it's small size making
downloading it faster than most. Burn it to a CD and then boot it. If
you do not use the Install icon (totally optional) nothing gets touched
on the computer's hard drive.

Not at all. If it IS a beta copy, then it DOES stop functioning every so
often - this started on every beta copy still in use after the Beta
expired...

Yes, the beta version does that. To determine which version she has type
"winver" in the search box on the start menu. (without the quotes)
If the box shows a version number lower that version 6.1.7600, it's a
beta and she'll have to buy a new windows license.

If it is Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) it should be closing down
regularly. I thought it was every 2 hours not 1

Do you mean after 60 minutes of idle time, or after 60 minutes while
someone is working? The power options can be set to shut down the
computer after a given length of idle time.
