How long did you wait? The delay may be normal.
I just did the updates that includes KB890830 (Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool - September 2011) on Windows XP and whatever
the equivalent ones for Vista and Windows 7 are.
On my XP system I was told I needed to reboot. No delays and no
delay when I rebooted again for good luck.
On my Windows 7 system I was not asked to reboot. When I rebooted
anyhow, as is my practice, there was no delay in shutdown or reboot.
However, on my Vista system, which I also was not asked to
reboot, when I tried to shutdown there was a delay of more than 15
minutes but less than 1 hour before the system shutdown. No delay
when I booted the system or shutdown again.
I have even longer delays in shutdown on the Vista system before when
I shutdown after completing Windows updates. I have had delays in
shutdown after Windows updates on Windows 7 also, but I didn't have
a problem with the latest batch.
I don't know if the problem is with my computers or Vista and
Windows 7 themselves. However, my point here is that you wait hours
before giving up on shutdown that includes installation of updates:
you have to wait for the completion of the updates, which may take
more
than 1/2 hour, especially if a WMSRT run is included, but the
inordinate but finite delays that happen on Vista and perhaps on
Windows 7 for some updates.
