Windows 7 Professional x64 (Windows Media Player)

I have recently bought Windows 7 Pro (x64) with my new laptop...

I followed the instructions online to change the default Windows Media
Player from x86 to x64. So now when I click on the quick launch icon, and
the icon in all programs start menu, it runs the x64 version.

However, all the file associations are still set up for x86, so when I click
mpg (or whatever) directly in explorer it still runs the old x86.

I have tried changing the file associations manually one-by-one from x86 to
x64, however it's slow and cumbersome and all it lists is two versions of
exactly the same name 'Windows Media Player', so all I can do is guess which
one it is by trial and error. Also, when I do this, it loses all the
Description, and other information regarding the file association and the
file (which I don't want to lose)

Does anybody please have any solution? (Thanks in advance)
Andy

What's your reason for making this change? Don't do it. You aren't
gaining anything.

Something to try:

In Windows Explorer, right-click on one of the files you wish to
associate with WMPx64 and select "Open with." Instead of choosing
either of the two displayed "Windows Media Player" options, select
"Choose default program...." Then browse to C:\Program Files\Windows
Media Player and select the applicable "Wmplayer.exe." (This presumes
that WMPx86 is located under the C:\Program Files (x86) folder tree.)
