I just bought a Sony Vaio F series notebook last Friday. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit but I need to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional in order to use it at work.

I took it to the IT department at work and by mistake they installed Windows 7 Pro 32bit over the 64bit Home Premium version (which does me no good as my design software is 64bit based). They are now having problems installing the 64bit Professional version, and nothing seems to work.

My Vaio model is VPCF120FL (this particular model is sold in Latin America)

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Whenever you get a new PC there is an option to burn the OS to DVD; I realize this would be home premium but do you have that? If you can restore that then the simplest method to upgrade to PRO is the anytime upgrade.

When you say they are having trouble can you be more specific? The software won't install? There are drivers missing for sound or whatever? Drivers would be here ...

mlm2t - installing the x64 version of Pro over the 32 can't be done. It will have to be done as a clean or "custom" install. The hard drive needs the partitions to be deleted and wiped clean and then a new fresh install with new partitions.

Plus they'll need to download all the x64 drivers for your model notebook from the notebook maker's website for the model you have.

they installed Windows 7 Pro 32bit over the 64bit Home Premium version IMPOSSIBLE,i agree with nibiru this can Only be done after format & clean Install as w7 will go from 32bit to x64bit but not the way you said, the IT department must have confused you.

Yes and no.

The part about going from 32 bit to 64 bit - that still can't be done.

Any architecture change requires clean install.

It's an IT department, I'm pretty sure they are smart enough to wipe and install, I'm guessing they just don't have the right drivers.

I'm guessing they just don't have the right drivers,IT departments have access to company drivers,I am not guessing but I can tell you when you first turned it on they call this (OOBE) some models give you a choice of 32bit or x64bit (Home Premium)your notebook was pre-loaded with x64bit So are you sure?

Is he sure of what?

mlm2Tt said it came with 64 premium but then his IT department at work installed Pro for him but unfortunately they used 32 bit. He needs 64bit for a piece of design software he uses. So now he took it back to them to get 64 Pro installed but they are having some sort of problem. Hopefully he comes back with more information.
