Windows 7 not seeing Avast for past week

I hope you folks can sort me out because I am totally immobile in a full leg
cast and it is not possible to go to my tech, etc. And as I can't get
upstairs to my desktop, I have to use WLM 2011 to access news groups....

I have used Avast for a long time on both my XP desktop and this HP laptop
(laptop since last November) with absolutely no problems, so this is totally
baffling!! Windows 7 keeps telling me I don't have an AV on here which is
totally ridiculous!! It recognized it before. Avast is working just fine
and I also have MBAM plus the usual little freebies (cc cleaner,
spywareblaster, etc). I ran the Avast Quick Scan today and it was clean as
expected.

I have no idea what changed with this and wondered if you could help me. I
am running this laptop off the wireless router upstairs btw. Hubby has no
clue re computers so can't get any sort of help there.

Short story....slipped on *non-slip* mat getting into tub and tore 85% of my
quad tendon from the kneecap (I am shuddering just typing this, durn it) and
had surgery 10 days later to re-attach it all and I can confirm 200% that
this is way more painful than a break!!

I will check back later when I can but am absolutely sure this computer is
clean......seems to be some sort of glitch with Win 7 and Avast IMO.

I have checked the Avast forum but nada there....same with the Win7 forum
but haven't typed this all out cuz it is a huge effort.

Very sorry to hear about your problem, but let me tell you that
certainly don't *have to* use Windows Live Mail 2011. In my view, and
that of most of the rest of us here, it's absolutely the worst choice
available. It's not so bad when you write your message in the first
place, but it's terrible when you respond. It completely screws up
quoting. The result is that your replies are so difficult to read that
many of us just killfile anybody who uses it.

There are lots of other choices of a newsreader. Some are free, some
can be bought at a low price. I personally use and like Agent 6.0 (not
free, but very good), and we would greatly appreciate it if you would
download and install either it or one of the free choices.

If Avast (a good choice, by the way) is running without a problem, I
just wouldn't worry about what Windows tells you.

I don't know the answer to your question, but in the short term you
can configure the Security Center to stop nagging you about it. Once
you get it fixed, enable that option again.

I ripped a tendon in my calf-knee area about a year ago. It's still
not quite right. Good luck!

Good luck on the rehabilitation therapy yet to come.

As for the Avast, it is possible for a virus to get into a system that
partially or totally shuts down anti-virus programs and hide from the
rest of the partially working program. This can happen to just about
any anti-virus program on the market from what I've seen.

You need to consider re-installing Avast and see if that clears up the
problem. If you have problems re-installing it then it could be some
malware trying to protect itself.

Should the above problem crop up then I'd either try a second anti-virus
program or most likely run one of those Live Linux boot disks which
include an anti-virus program on it and give that a go.

Either way I would not be happy until a second or even third brand of
anti-virus program scan shows clean and that Windows is once again
admitting that you have a working program.

Boy do I sympathize. I've been through two rotator cuff repairs
(one for each side) & the rehab was long, painful, hard work --
but worth it in the end to be functional again.
No, the second time wasn't easier but by then I knew the drill. :-)

I hope you have a really *good* therapist that you can work well with -- it
makes all the difference

Hi Heather,

Sorry to hear about your fall.

Do you have some of the real time modules turned off in Avast? If so,
turn them all on and see if that makes a difference. If Windows 7
complains because one of the real time modules is off, I would just turn
off the notifications in Windows as someone else suggested.

If all else fails try uninstalling Avast and re-installing it, see
if that helps. It shouldn't take too long to do.

My computer is working just fine again!!!

I read all your replies and checked Avast website (not their forum) and
after doing a command prompt search to make sure Avast didn't need to be
restarted, I downloaded a fresh copy of the free one and did a clean
install.......immediately the OS recognized Avast and all is well. Ran a
couple of scans as a precaution.

I have no clue what caused this but felt strongly that it was not
malware....just a silly glitch which could have been caused by me trying to
type flat on my back or something along those lines, grin. I remember back
in the WinME days that if there was ever something bizarre that could go
wrong, it would only happen to me!!!

So mega thanks for pointing me in the right direction and tks also for your
best wishes...

The thing to do is turn off all your firewalls. That way your computer will see
that your antivirus is installed as it catches one virus after another from
happening. For the more seasoned such as myself i've never in my life used any
anitvirus software. It's for sissies.
