Windows 7 Key

Hello W7forums,

I have pre-ordered Windows 7 Professional from the internet, but I am going to be getting a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it around the same time.

Can I type in the license key / product code for W7 Pro in to the Home Premium version and will it upgrade it? I need the features of Pro and will only be using it on this laptop, but I don't want to clean install unless I need to.

Any guidence would be welcome.

The laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on will not recognise a Windows 7 Professional Product Key as its own Key. But you could wipe the Hard Drive and then install Windows 7 Professional to the Laptop.

Can you not just get a Laptop with Windows 7 Professional already installed ?

It wouldn't be that hard to do a clean install on a brand new machine. I'm assuming the laptop comes with recovery CDs or a recovery partition. Actually, a clean install will get rid of any trialware and other pre-installed junk.

You can buy a laptop with no OS then you could install your pre-ordered Windows 7 Professional (why pay for an OS if you don't need it)
