So awile back I was asking questions prior to W7 installation. I just wanted to give anyone whos interested a heads up that everything went perfectly.

The D-link PCI-E network adapter is awsome and W7 automatically detected it and found the right driver I barely had to do anything!

XP Emulation works like a charm and I'm able to run my old programs such as Total Annihiltion, Starcraft, Diablo II and a few others.

Microsoft really has it on lock down this time, I love the gadget idea on the destktop, Brilliant!

That's the way it looks. Windows 7 is the easiest of all versions of Windows to setup & go. None of that multiple times of checking for updates, until five or six times, you're fully updated. That's too time consuming, and unfortunately a problem with XP. I mean, checking for updates, for updates?

So far, I haven't seen that with 7, it's possible that one could creep in like that, but to have to check for updates to install any OS more than three times, is too much.

Infernx, I hope that you enjoy Windows 7 as much as I have. There's plenty of tutorials and help on the site, should you need it.

BTW, I have a 1TB Caviar Black, too. A very nice drive to have.

Best of Luck,
Cat

When comparing Windows XP and Windows 7, there are things that cannot be compared. The number of updates being one of them. Windows 7 is not old enough to have the same issues as Windows XP with the number of updates. This will be an issue with Windows 7 after time, for now its to early for any comparison on the topic.

Hopefully, when the time comes that you have to repeatedly check for updates to do a simple install of 7, the next version of Windows (8, or whatever it'll be named) will be released. An hour and a half just to update is a lot.

However, I'm happy for Infernx, it's good to see another satisfied member here.

If I remember somewhat correctly, XP had about the same number of updates as 7 does now at the same lifespan. Although I do believe that the SP1 came out in less than a year's time as compared to the Windows 7 timetable for SP1.

Nice to hear of someone getting their install going well with no issues. You read about all these BSOD's and other issues and it gets a bit depressing at times. Nice to hear when it goes smoothly.

I wonder when the day will arrive when we don't need/want to keep looking for the next O/S? Eventually it will get so good there will be no need for more change unless it branches off into two distinct groups of home user and business user.

I'll say in my first three months of having Seven I was virtually doing a weekly re-install/repair. And that was down to me, I was trying to use it like I used XP and it didn't like what I was doing (I customise, heavy. Is there a Computer Customisers Anonymous?). But once I realised I needed to "forget" XP and move on I've done one repair install, and that was a choice matter.
I visit my daughter as often as possible (200 miles away) and every time I arrive I'm given her Vista Lappy to sort out. In comparison, after user error problems removed (ME!!), Win 7 is very stable. I'm glad I hung out for it, that's for sure.
