Good evening ~ Would like to split/partition disk into 3 parts, one
for Win 7, one for XP and one for Linux.

Starting out w/Hm Prem. Cannot find Admininstrative Tools, which I
understand will take me to Disk Management where partitioning SW is
available.

Pls, what am I missing?

Thank You

Wayne

Open Control Panel. Change View by Small Icons (Setting at top right of
window.)

You will now see Administrative tools. Open that, then Computer
Management, then Storage management.

Otherwise, open the System and Security category, and it's in there,
inside Administrative tools.

The recommended installation order is XP, then Windows 7, then Linux, by
the way.

Everything !!!!!!!!!!!
Just quit while you are ahead and your system still works.

You want to install XP and Linux, along with Win 7, re-partitioning your
'LIVE' HDD to make space....
And you do not even know how to start 'Disk Management' ??????

Do you really want to mess-up your computer that badly ?????

BTW, it does start the same way as in XP or Vista:
right-click 'My Computer' > Manage > Disk Management
or
Start > all programs >administrative tools > computer management > disk
management.

Hi, Wayne.

There are several ways to start Disk Management. My favorite is to just
press the Start button, type diskmgmt, msc, and press Enter. (Actually,
"diskm" will probably be enough; "diskmgmt" will appear in the Search
results box and you can just press Enter.) You will need Administrator
credentials, because this utility is powerful enough to do harm, as well as
good.

When DM appears, Maximize the window and widen the Status column so that you
can see what it is trying to tell you. Study that screen before you do
anything here! The top is the Volume List; the bottom a Graphical View of
your existing hard disks (and optical drives, USB devices, etc.) showing how
they have been divided into partitions and logical drives.

There is an excellent Help file here, but it is arranged as a reference, not
a textbook or tutorial, so it may take some digging to find what you need.
But if you will spend some time here, you will learn more than most users
ever know about your hard disks.

I've used just about every version of Windows since 1.0 (about 1985), but
not Linux, and I've been dual-booting successive versions since Win95/NT4 in
1998. The Golden Rule of multi-booting is to always install the Newest
Windows Last. If you don't observe this rule, you will then have to Repair
your system - which is not as hard to do as it used to be. Win7 knows just
what to do when it finds WinXP already installed. But WinXP never heard of
Win7, so its Setup has no idea how to handle Win7.

DM will let you Shrink an existing partition and create a new partition from
the freed space. (Shrinking may be a multi-step process if unmovable files
are encountered.) DM will also handle creating, formatting, deleting and
other disk management tasks.

STOP!!!!!!

You have Windows 7 Professional.

Go to Microsoft and download the Virtual PC software.

http://search.microsoft.com/en-us/re...q=virtual%20pc

Install it.

Follow the instructions and set up a Virtual PC for XP.

Install XP on that Virtual machine.

Follow the instructions and set up a Virtual PC for Linux ( I don't know
why anyone would want to to this, but...)

Install Linux on that Virtual machine.

You seem to be hell bent on screwing up your computer. Just stop it! Or
go ahead, it really makes no difference to me. :-)

Errr....

The OP seems to be saying that he's starting with Home Premium. (Hm Prem?)

Where do you get the Professional bit from?

Admittedly, having Professional or Ultimate would make life a lot easier.

You're right. In an earlier post he asked about the Pro version and it
stuck with me. That said, he still seems hell bent on trashing his
system, but it's his system and he can do what he wants with it. :-)

Wayne, my mistake. I thought you had Professional.

Go ahead with your plans.

We all have to learn somehow, I've made some 'orrible computer foul-ups
in the past, and learnt from them. If it's a spare system, as you say,
there's no problem.

My latest mistake was installing Vista on here when installing a program
totally FUBAR'd XP. Roxio Video Lab HD, if you want to know. It's not
the first time I've had one of their products do it, either.

I may have to buy a Windows 7 professional licence for this one, too.

Let's Reset. (Appreciate the + and - comments :-) , all meant in
good spirit. I do not wish to mess up my machine.

I have Hm Premium.

I also have (not yet installed) the Hm Prem -to- Professional upgrade
'cause I wish to run Quickbooks which Win 7 64-bit does not like, thus
running this appl in Win 7's XP mode rather than buy another upgrade
from Intuit. Is this workable?

Linux is for a side-car ride - a play with it OS.

So before I install the Hm Pre -to- Prof upgrade, please, throw those
darts or other. Day has been long, running what today, in 21st C
term, as a SaaS. (Three large, heavy computation, web applications -
or does a web-based, heavy-duty appl, multi-processing, data retrieval
appl not qualify to be called a SaaS in the Cloud world?)

Great weekend to all.

BTW, has anyone in the group also jumped into the Android world?
Bought an ASUS Transformer - a lot of WiFi apps in our business now
running with iPads. Thank you for your patience.
