hi all i'm new here. the reason i'm posting is that all of a sudden i'm getting a message on my laptop saying my copy of windows 7 is not genuine? which is strange, because it seemed genuine enough for the past 12 months. this happened with windows xp on my desktop. i've bought both comps from a respectable high street shop. so how can microsoft say my copy isn't genuine?? i also have an xbox, are they gonna tell me thats not genuine too?

Have you gone to the Windows Genuine Validation and run their application to verify?

This "high street shop" is a local computer vendor? Did they attach the C.O.A. or Certificate Of Authenticity to the notebook computer? Do you have the label with the product key attached also?

Have you tried calling Microsoft Tech Support to see if they can tell you why it's saying "Not Genuine"?

Yes, go ahead an uninstall Avast anti-virus.

Go here to get the uninstall utility: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

After uninstalling it, let us know what happened and how things are working.

I've used Avast for many years with XP, and I just don't think that it has anything to do with your system not being genuine.

It's a possibility, and happens regularly, repair shop copies of Windows comes back as non-genuine. Some of them gets their copies from questionable sources, for the lowest price possible. They may slide volume license copies to their customers, or copies obtained from TechNet or MSDN that are reserved for their customers. At some point, these copies will come back as non-genuine, although they run fine at first.

I'd highly suggest that you carry the computer back to the seller, explain the situation, and demand to "make things right", either by refunding your money in full, or giving you a new, genuine copy of Windows. In a shrink wrap package, a full retail (or OEM) package, unopened.

If by chance the seller doesn't cooperate, report them to Microsoft, they have a program that may help you get a new, legit copy of Windows at a greatly reduced price. But you'll have to cooperate with MS, and furnish any information that's asked about the purchase, including the seller's info.

Best of Luck,
Cat

On thinking about this, I don't think Avast had anything to do with this.

Have you tried any of the other recommendations I mentioned?

Something just doesn't looks right here. Not just one, but two copies of Windows being flagged as non-genuine. I wouldn't be surprised if your XBox comes back the same.

I highly suggest that you take immediate action, before this "shop" leaves town. You're probably not the only victim.

The described circumstances sounds like you're dealing with dishonest people, even though they may appear to look legit. These kind of "shops" make us all pay more for our software, much like shoplifters makes us pay more for retail products.

I have no use for a crook, whatsoever.

swapnil, I don't quite understand where you're coming from here. My 7 Ultimate version updates just fine, with no issues.
