Hi, have a problem, I have a program that keeps starting up when I boot up
windows. I have used msconfig and taken the check out of the progams box,
also checked the startup group, which is empty. next time I start windows
the program starts up, and in the msconfig startup box the check is back in
the box. Anything i can do to stop it starting up
Thanks and Regards
Bob

And the name of the program is... ?

The details may tell us whether it's malware or not.

Or some kind of pest that looks like malware.

Malware likes to put itself back in Startup.

Malware is programmed to do this. One remedy of the 1980s was to identify
its name and rename the .EXE file so (when called by Registry) it could not
load itself: but more recent malware is more subtly written to inhibit
this.

I'm not sure, but even having done what you've done, aren't there
services which can still start when booting? Just type "Services" in
the start menu search box, click on "Services", and see if the program
is in the name list with an entry in the "Startup type" column as
"Automatic".

It sounds like it could be malware. What's the name of the program?

Try running Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool, which is updated
every month. Go to Start > Run > mrt.exe

And you may also want to try Malwarebytes Free.

Consider using Autoruns.exe, free from somewhere on Microsoft's site,
which finds many more startup programs that what you have used so far,
and gives you tools to suppress anything.

But also pay attention to the remarks about malware that others have
made.

As others have said, it would have helped a lot if you had given some
information about the program in question.

First hit in search engine. Search terms "utorrent startup".

"in µTorrent: CTRL+P -> General ->
uncheck "Start µtorrent on system startup"
at Windows Integration"
