Win 7/WLM won't "Send Link by Email"

I'm running Win7 Home Premium on my laptop, with IE8, Office 2007
Enterprise Edition, (I didn't load Outlook) and Windows Live Mail. With
IE8, I can't perform any tasks under "Send", like send the link that I'm
currently on. When I try, Windows Live Mail welcome appears, but then
just disappears. I've been to the MSFT forums and other help, and have
my settings correct, but still no luck.

So, I decided to install FFox 5, and it works just fine, and will 'send
links by opening Window Live Mail, and putting the link in the body of a
new email message.

If I go to the Set Program Defaults, I see, under Custom:

O Use my current browser
Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox

Access to both programs is enabled


O Use my current e-mail program
Windows Live Mail

Access to both programs is enabled

On my desktop, I have WinXP Pro, with IE8, Office 2010 with Outlook (not
Windows Live Mail).

The default program settings on this desktop are set up as above, exdept
Windows Live Mail is replaced by Outlook. On this machine, I can launch
either browser, and when I send link by email, Outlook launches and works
just fine.

Any ideas why with Win7/Windows Live Mail, IE8 won't send an email link
(or web page), but FFox will?

Change the setting from "use my current e-mail program" to the specific
email program you want to use.

Hi,

The only e-mail program on the laptop is WLM. I have tried setting this
to both "use my current e-mail program (WLM) and "use WLM" (which is the
default e-mail program. No joy either way.

If you right click on the website itself, you should get an option to
"email with windows live". This should work but will probably open the
browser version of Windows Live Mail.

I would also advise you to upgrade your browser to IE9. And if that
doesn't solve the problem, download & install or reinstall the latest
version of WLM.

As I mentioned to BobbyM, I did do that, but no luck. I'll just try it
again.

When I get home, I'm going to try all combinations/permutations on my
Win7 laptop. If none works, I'll install IE9, and if still no luck, I
may un/re install WLM.

WLM is only a fast and dirty mail client put there by MS to keep people from
griping about no emal client. It doesn't live up to many of the several
features we've become accustomed to in programs like OE, Thunderbird and the
rest; and it's junk IMO although ymmv. It is in no way optimized to be a
good mail cliient and is best set aside in favor of one of the others freely
available.

I agree. I don't care for it, but wanted to see what it was like. I've
tried all the free ones (Tbird, etc.), but what I've always liked the
best is OE. And, I've had to set up IE on most of the machines I have in
my house because the rest of the users (family) like the simplicity of
OE. That will end as the machines get replaced.

The only extras I really need in an email client is the ability to embed
pictures inline (for sending to older relatives that don't know how to
download attachments), and open ppts. I couldn't care less about the
other media and social networking capabilities of WLM.

I do wish that OE, on my other machines, was able to embed more than one
pic at a time. When I have to embed many pics, I'll use Picassa.

Who knows...I may end up abandoning WLM for something else, since I'm the
only one that uses this particular laptop.

I did some more troubleshooting, but still no luck.

I did a repair on Windows Live Essentials, and rebooted. I then went to
the Control Panel to set the program defaults, under Custom. Both IE8
and FFox show, as they should, and it's set to use my default browser.
When I try to change it to either IE8 or FFox, the corresponding check
mark remains, but Enable Access to this progam greys out. If I then
leave Control Program, restart, and come back to Control Program, it's
set right back to use my default browser. If I launch IE8, and use
Tools/Options to set IE8 as my default browser, the setting in Control
Panel still says to use my default browser. It seems that I can't change
settings in this applet.
