Is Win 7 smooth for work with 1.4 G Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 256M Video??

It is my laptop with XP for work. Very smooth with 500MB

RAM available even if Firefox, Acrobat, Word and Matlab

are all open.



I do not pursue fancy visual effects, but do want a smooth

work experience. Could you give me some input if you have

experience with Win 7 on such low-end computers?

My desktop has a 1.5GHz dual core CPU, 256MB of Video RAM, and the stock RAM was 2GB DDR2. It shipped with Win 7 Home Premium. It ran good, but I wanted it to run faster, and run VM's, so I upped the RAM to 4GB & used the Anytime Upgrade option to install 7 Pro.

Your specs looks OK, what you need to do is run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Run that and see what you get.

Thanks for prompt response, cat. Unfortunately, the upgrade adviser
can not be installed because the windows installer is not installed correctly.
I do not know what goes wrong.

Are you running it from IE? Many of these type of tools, including online virus scanners, works best using IE.

If you ran it from FF, try using IE & see what you come up with.

You should be able to install either the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows 7 on your setup. 2GB of RAM is the minimum recommended by MS for the 64-bit version.

I would go with the 64-bit version if I were you and then you could always add more RAM is that's feasible with your notebook.

Once you have installed Windows 7, you'll never look back to XP at all.
