Why is copying data between my 2 computers VERY slow?

Copying data on to my new Windows7 PC (from my old PC) seems EXTREMELY slow.
For example copying about 1.5GB of various data files takes over 50 minutes
(claimed speed c.500KB/sec)

However I have a new-ish "good quality" Router and the network adapters
for both my PCs claim to be running at "100Mbps/Full Duplex".


My configuration:

1. WindowsXP machine (3 years old)

MOTHERBOARD: Intel Pentium 4 D945GNTLR system board 3.2GHz
Network Adapter: Intel PROSet version 14.7.23.0
Adapter Speed setting: 100Mbps/Full Duplex (Autodetect)


2. Router: (1 month old)

Make: Thomson TG585 v7


3. Windows7 machine (1 week old)

Motherboard: Intel DP55WB MA TX
Processor: Intel Core I5 750 2.66GHz
Network Adapter: Intel 82578DC "Gigabit Network Connection"
Link speed status: 100Mbps/Full Duplex (manually set)


Why is it running so SLOWLY?
Do I need to do something to the router to speed it up?

Yep That's normal to be slow but not that slow becuase you're useing 100Mbps not 1000Mbps What are all the apdators and what type of cable are you using. Can you use wireless instead.

It turned out that I needed to update my drivers, restart my router, and set speed in both computer to "auto". It now copies at about 1 or 2 MBytes/second for small files and up to 10 MBytes/second for large files.

Interesting data copies on and off my (extremely old 20MB) iPod very much faster - at up to 22MBytes/second.

Did you try connecting directly the two PCs? I'm pretty sure it's the router internal transfer speed who's slow. In fact even if my router says 100Mbit ports in the end when it comes get and send data from one client to another in the network the speed doesn't go higher than 10MBIT (about 1Mbyte/s). I had to change something to get "real" 100mbit

Not a bad idea, but I cant connect directly because both of them need to connect to the Internet!

Just so you know connecting the computers together bypassing the switch is more complicated than simply connecting them together.

There is two ways this can be done.

1. The computers can be setup to connect computer to computer
2. A crossover cable can be used to connect from computer to computer

If you do not configure the computers to communicate this way or use the crossover cable. The computers will not be able to communicate.

Lets just say if you simply connect the computers without special configuration on a standard cable, they will both be talking on the same line when one should be listening instead.
