I am using Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 32-bit.
All of a sudden the volume icon in the task bar is missing. How do I
bring it back?

Things I have already tried:
* Turned off and rebooted the computer several times;
* Right-clicked the Task Bar -> Properties. The Volume icon is set to
Off, is _grayed out_, and _won't let me change it to On_;
* Right-clicked the Task Bar -> Properties->Customize Notification
Icons. The Volume entry is set to Show Icons And Notifications.

I have not installed/uninstalled anything, so I am baffled about this
behavior.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Try this...
Right-clicked the Task Bar > Properties > Customize
check box to all icons > OK
then just above is
turn system icons on or off <click this>
make sure volume is 'on'
try off then on

Go to Control Panel > Sound and see if your usual device is enabled.

Do you have any sound at all ?

Is there evidence of a sound device in Device Manager ?

I've had one custom sound control panel, that will load no matter
whether the associated hardware is present or not. (Unplug the sound
card and the thing still is present in the tray.)

But a lot of other sound driver packages, the custom mixer panel
does a check that the hardware is present and won't load unless it
is detected. I'm wondering if the lack of any volume control icon
is related to a lack of detected sound device ?

It's also possible the issue could be registry related, but I've
not had a sound problem with Windows 7 yet. So haven't been poking
around in there.
