Hi All,

This link is to a demo of Windows 8. It looks an awful much
like the iPad. (I wonder if Apple will sue M$, again.)

Without commenting on whether on not the new iPad (tiles) interface
is a good thing or not, here is a video of what is in store for
us all in the near future:

Touch-screen interface belongs to iPad?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w.../explore/touch

Another thing; virtual keyboard? I was using that long before touch-screen.

What I'm wondering is whether MS will keep the mouse with Win8. And I
feel A1 convinced they will, because otherwise it would be a major
hardware upgrade with their new OS for the vast majority of current users.

I don't see how they could dispense with the mouse until touch-screen
monitors become a lot more common. And even then I can't see doing any
kind of graphics work with a touch screen. Even if they add touch-screen
operation, they'd have to retain mouse operation as well.

As far as I could tell from the preview of the next version of Mac OS/X
(Lion, due next month, upgrade for $30), they are adding "gestures" that
can be performed on the touch pad but not eliminating the mouse.

I really, really hope that touch screens remain optional forever. I
don't want my greasy paw prints on my monitor.

I agree wholeheartedly, aside from the fact that my eyes are so bad, I'd
have to get new glasses and put the monitor on my lap to use it. As my dad
used to say, "My eyes haven't grown worse, my arms have just grown shorter."
I find using a touchscreen to be very uncomfortable- I've never been able to
position myself just right to work on one for any length of time. And, as
Percival posted, I can't imaging trying to do CAD work on one.

They're ok for occasional things such as signing in at the surgery to
see your doctor, tourist maps in public squares etc.
I have an iPad too. It's fine to hold it either on your lap or in your
left hand, and then use your right forefinger.
But I'm like you with emails and browsing; mouse at an upright screen.

I have very little experience with touch screens, so I'm not at all
sure I'm right. But I *think* a touch screen would be a good idea on a
laptop or tablet, but not on a desktop.

If one thinks about how tiles are used on the iPhone or iPad, the
screen is always placed on a table or on one's lap -- never with one's
arms stretched horizontal. The M$ developers working on this should
be asked stand up and reach their arms out in the air in front of them
and see how long they can maintain that position. The ergonomics
of tiles on a workstation with a stand up monitor are atrocious.

A far as M$ ripping off others ideas (tiles and the iPad/iPhone):
imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I am not sure how
many of you have had a chance to look at KDE4's desktop (one of
many Linux GUI's), Windows 7 looks eerily similar. I would not be
surprised if Apple did not find a way to sue M$ over Windows 8.

Touchscreen laptops and desktops? Are they joking? I sit about 30 inches
from my desktop monitor. My arms are only 24 inches long and I can't
extend them. May be next they will sell us expandable bionic arms with
vibrating fingers. The girls will love that but I am not sure about
computers and monitor screens!

Yes, my point exactly--sorry if I didn't make that clear. That's why I
*think* that what I said was right.
