When I insert my external hard drive in the USB port, I get this message:

Your device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port

Does it mean all my USB ports are USB 1.0? This is a fairly newer laptop.

Any ideas?

You may need to go to Device Manager and click View tab, the choose "By Connection.

Expand the listings until you see your USB ports listed and then choose update and then manual, select where you have you G45 Intel graphic/chipset drivers stored and have it search through that. Or just choose C drive and have it search through the drive and it should update the USB ports.

Once in a while I'll get the same message, which happens if I don't have the USB cable fully engaged in either the device or the port on the computer.

Try plugging it in and unplugging a few times and see if it clears up.

I've had that to happen to me once in a while, I just unplugged and replugged the device, and the issue was resolved.

But once, and this wouldn't be your case, I had a Latitude C640, it displayed that message everytime I inserted a USB 2.0 device. I went to Dell Support, and downloaded the correct driver for it, and the issue was resolved.

You may want to try Driver Max, they have a free option for two driver downloads per day (per email address). They scan your system for all drivers in your computer, and show you which ones need updating. You may be surprised at what you'll find, many users has a half dozen (or more) drivers that need updating. Plus, they have the drivers themselves. I believe it would be a good shot for you.

Your other option would be to find a driver disc for your computer on eBay. I have one for mine, and it's saved the day for me numerous times. Cost is usually $5 or so. Seifelden Electronics has a store on eBay that sells these discs, and he specializes in Dell products. You can email him @ http://seifelden.com. But his prices on eBay are better, due to the competition. Hope this helps, Kalario.

PS: There's a link to his eBay store on the site. Just look carefully until you find the disc for your computer.
