This will probably be a little long winded but--

I'm dual booting Window 7 and Linux Mint. I installed virtuabox in both
systems. First I put WinXP in the box. Works like I remember, great.
Finds my Flash drives and Hitachi backup drive. USB work fine. I then
installed PCLinuxOS which also works great and the USB system sees the
extra drives. Two days ago I got my Win7 DVD so installed it in the
virtulbox. Installs without a problem. The problem is that Win7 knows
the Flash drives are there but can't install the drivers and tells me
Code10. I spent most of my day yesterday looking through Google for a
solution. I filled about four or five pages of a Note Pad with notes
which I deleted one by one as I found the suggestions didn't work. I
thought I would come to the newsgroup and see if anyone had any ideas or
experience with this problem. I tried the program suggested by Microsoft
to fined the problem and provide a solution. NO GO. I removed the
reference in the Manager for the Flash drives, closed Windows and
restarted it. It found the Flash Drives drives again but there was still
no drivers that could be installed. Until I find a cure for this I'm not
going to substitute Win7 for Vista. I tried the same process in Vista
and have the same results. Can't install drivers. I spent an hour trying
to figure out how to replace the Win7 drivers with the drivers from
Vista which work great in Vista. I couldn't get any ware because I can't
delete or rename the Win7 drivers. Any thoughts to help me get started
on a new line would be appreciated.

TIA
Little Al

What happens when you go into Device Manager and try to install drivers
for the things, ticking the box to allow for searching the Web?

What also happens if you uninstall and reboot?

I referred to his in my note above but wasn't very clear in my terminology.

In Device Manager when I uninstall and reboot the Flash drives are found
again but without the installation of new drivers It just tells me This
devise cannot start (Code 10) My request through search the web yields
the information that the existing drivers are all there is.

When I go to the website for the Trancend16 flash drive there is no
information for drivers because Windows7 provide drivers.
The, This devise cannot start (Code 10) seems to me to indicate that the
drivers are correct but that there is a problem glitch.

Thanks, Little Al

Hello Little Al.

Explain why you have a dual-boot for Win7 and Linux Mint, and yet you're
trying to put another Win7 in a virtual box.
BTW, which virtual box are you using?

I'm guessing the problem is with Virtual Box, not Windows 7. Or maybe
with running Windows inside a virtual machine in general.

Running W7 directly on several computers (5 or 6), I have seen no such
problems with flash drives or flash cards.

There is a theory here, that the problem could be related to an
UpperFilter or LowerFilter registry key. Typically, those are installed
by applications that attempt to intercept traffic in the protocol
stack. This would require registry editing.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...6-bbc6d9b69bc9

The thing using the UpperFilter or LowerFilter in the host OS,
could be the VirtualBox software.

Thanks for the input PAUL and GENE.

To Paul. I Went in and modified the Registry as suggested. I only had
one of the filters registered so delete it and restarted Win7. It did
not make any difference to the flash drive drivers being loaded. So I
returned the registry to the previous state.

To Gene: I will follow up on your information tomorrow when I'm fresh.
NOTE: Neither WinXP nor Mint Linux have problems with the USB drives in
VBox. I only have the three DVD's I made up when I got this box, for my
Vista and the Key information is in a hidden area of the box which is a
pain to get to. Otherwise I would have installed it in the Virtual box
to check the drivers out.

Thanks again guys. It really doesn't matter to anything important about
this problem. Tinkering with these operating system keeps me out of trouble.

Little Al

Hi Ed, Fair question. First, This HP box came with Vista Home installed
There is a long explanation but I'll keep it short. I really don't do
anything with the operating systems. Read e-mail, write to one or two of
my kids and grandkids that don't do e-mail, do streaming media usually
music and sometimes downloading talking books. I get bored so I
installed Virtual Box to experiment. I installed PCLinuxOS in Vbox just
to see how it went. It went so well I tried installing WinXP. It runs
better than I remembered. I run almost all my simple programs off one
of my Transcend Flash drives without installing many basic programs,
Firefox,Chromium, Thunderbird, which are universal to Windows and Linux.
Also I keep my financial information in KMYMONEY which is a Linux
program. I'm not much of a user but a great tinkerer. I found this Win7
Pro oem disk on Amazon for an acceptable price so I got it to try out. I
put it in VBox because I didn't want to reformat my Vista partition
until I was satisfied it worked OK. I really don't need Win7 as I only
have one program that isn't in the Linux repository and that is a jigsaw
program written by some fellow in Italy. Sometimes I'll go for a month
in my favorite Linux Mint only shutting it down to get the updates for
Vista.

Ed, I'm running the Linux version of VirtualBox OSE. I would have to
close down and restart in Vista to tell you what I'm running there.

Sorry Ed probably more than you wanted to know. If you share with Ken
Blake tell him I remember him from the days he was sharing on the Win98
news group.

Little Al

I spend a lot of time doing similar things. I tinker to get more
understanding, and then try to use that understanding to help others
with their problems.

You might be a bit ahead of me, though, and you should be guiding me. If
I can be of help as someone to bounce your ideas off, well then, maybe I
can provide at least that.

OK.

I'd be curious to know, if you ever find out if my guesses were right or
wrong, to post that info ... thanks.

If you do start to get into trouble anyway, consider trying to learn to
program for the Android OS :-)
