The printer is connected to an XP computer which has been used
successfully with my other XP computer over the network. Windows 7 finds
the printer on the network when I try to add it but I then get the
message 'driver not found'

If I physically connect the windows 7 computer to the printer, printing
works fine.

any ideas?

Well, of course, the Win 7 driver is not installed on the XP system.

Install the 'Other OS driver (Win 7)' on the XP machine.

In spite of what Mr Garcia said, you probably can't install a Windows 7
driver (especially a printer driver) on the XP machine until you
install Windows 7 on it :-)

Also you don't really want to. The problem is one of networking; each
computer has to have its own *native* printer driver to create the
printer data stream, and networking gets the data to the computer that
is attached to the printer.

Since you can print OK on the Windows 7 machine when the printer is
connected directly, it sounds like you have to fix the network setup or
printer setup[1] on the Win 7 machine. You may also have to do
something different with the XP's network setup, but I would guess not.

Other than those generic remarks, I can offer no concrete ideas, since
I use my router to support my printer. It works very nicely and doesn't
require any other computer to be on, but it requires either a router
with a USB port or a printer with wired or wireless LAN capability
(mine uses wired LAN).

[1] You may have to go into the Win 7 printer setup and inform it
properly that you're printing over the network. Especially if you can
print directly to the printer without making any changes to the setup.
That implies no network setup is in place.

You could try using a program called Network Magic from Cisco:

http://www.purenetworks.com/

Once installed on each PC on your network, it makes sharing files,
folders and hardware so easy that anyone can do it. It also helps one
to set up network security and protect your network from intruders, and
when used on a laptop it protects your shared folders when you're away
from your home network.

It's a great program, I've been using it for several years. There is a
free trial so one can evaluate the software and see if it fits your needs.

Simplest method ever:

Connecting an XP printer to Win7
http://www.sevenforums.com/network-s...c-win-7-a.html

I used it for an older HP printer that had no Win7 drivers, and it worked
great, until the printer finally died (nothing to do with Win7 or XP).

Thanks to all for the suggestions .. I,m not sure how but I have it
working now .. I tried to install drivers on the XP machine using the xp
machine, that didn't work (there was no driver for Stylus C46 at epson
for win 7 so I tried xp64 and vista64 .. it didn't seem to work) I
played about on the windows 7 computer again .. something downloaded and
installed .. but it installed to the XP computer from the windows 7
computer .. (where before it had searched windows update and failed to
find a driver) .. ..I am tempted to restore the system just to see if I
can understand what I did differently. .. although .. if it aint broke
... they say.
cheers
