There is a Microsoft program to transfer files. It is called Easy
Transfer and requires one of a memory stick (rather a big one), an
external disc or an "Easy Transfer Cable".

The program is already there on a W7 machine but you need to run it on
the old machine as well and will have to download it from
www.microsoft.com/download.

It does not seem perfect but it did transfer most of my settings and
would have done the files and photos if I had wanted.

Since these PCs already have an ethernet port... go down to a PC
specialty shop and
purchase a red ethernet crossover cable. I have used one on a neighbors
new PC to
transfer files over from an XP box to a Win7 box and it worked correctly.
Go here for a look see for reference.

All you have to do is plug in the cable to the XP ethernet port and the
other end
to the Win7 ethernet port. Then start the Easy Transfer program. This
way you won't need the
ethernet router. If you have an ethernet router, then you won't need to
buy a cable. Just hook
up the new PC to the router box.
