SP1 finally installed

But it wasn't easy. Trying to reinstall it led to an error message:

----------------------
spinstall.exe - System Error

(red X)

The program can't install because sqmapi.dll is missing from your
computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
----------------------

Agent Ransack found 33 files of varying size called sqmapi.dll on the
computer. Which one was required for the update?

I ran sfc /scannow and ended up with a 13Mb CBS.log file! Of course,
Windows wouldn't let me open it to examine it (TrustedInstaller causing
"Access denied" problems again), but I was able to copy it to the
desktop and open it in notepad. There were numerous examples of a
corrupted sqmapi.dll being mended.

After that, I tried to install SP1 again. Went without problem. Winver
now shows Build 7601 Service Pack 1.

What were you doing to your PC to have messed everything up? Several million
people have installed SP1 without your problems.

I also installed SP1 first time round without problems, other than a
slower boot time. I tried to correct that with Sysinternals Autoruns,
and that resulted in an unbootable PC (I unchecked entries relating to
an Acronis TrueImage trial and Adobe Acrobat Reader, which I don't use.
Why this made the PC unbootable I don't understand). I soon got a
pre-SP1 machine operating again, but for some reason it wasn't as
"clean" as it was when I first installed SP1, leading to the install
problems.
