SOT: Google Earth

Is anyone having problems with Google Earth? For several days the red
and the blue colours have been separated so there is no clear image
and the maps are unusable. I have tried reinstalling.

sounds like you've enabled 3D anaglyph mode ...

It has that appearance but I cannot see you to undo it. I have
unticked all the various View options. A quick Google search suggests
that 'because Google is a piece of crap company' there is no off
option.

I of course make no comment on this assessment, having been the
subject of opprobrium in this group for criticising another well known
developer of software.

I couldn't find information in Google Earth itself (but I'm using an
older copy at the moment). Also, the Google Earth User Manual PDF file,
didn't delve into it.

The references I can find to alaglyph, seem to be using additional
software. You'd need some way to check to see if something has
been added to the setup. You could try changing the Preferences
between DirectX and OpenGL, but that doesn't guarantee it'll get
disabled. (The idea being, your typical add-in software will only
be set up for one graphics standard, rather than both.)

I also saw some mention of nVidia drivers automatically enabling 3D
"because they could", but I assumed that would use shutter-glasses not
red/blue ones.

Thanks. That seems to have been the cause, following a recent update.

FWIW, this PC is XP, and yesterday I also found that GE (not sure which
version, but possibly an automatically updated recent one) had suddenly
decided not to work properly.

One of the problems is that I can see no Earth - just a background of
stars. If I select 'Grid', the lines of latitude and longitude show me
where the Earth should be. When I zoom in, the Earth is actually there -
but very dark. However, my saved Places are still where they should be.

Googling for help indicates that the nVIDIA video card drivers might
need updating (mine's a GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X). In the meantime, I
find that GE Version 6.1.0.5001 is the last one which works normally
(even V6.2 has problems).

Finally, the latest GE (V7.0.3.8542) - installed today - is working fine
on my W7 Dell D630 laptop.

In my experience, 3D is sent in anaglyph when the player software
recognizes that the monitor or display is not 3D-capable.

Several player programs that I've tried provide options for 3D output
only in anaglyph on this computer, and add true 3D on the computer
connected to the TV.

Naturally, the nVidia drivers have to be appropriately configured too.
