recent updates

A few days ago Win7 Pro,96 had 13 updates which I took down. One
problem: In the quick start area of the task bar (which is dark blue
in color) is an icon for a recently installed Windows search program
"Agent Ransack." This icon has changed from white to black
(approximately) and can't be seen. I asked the company and was told I
must have an unusual setup as this is the only complaint.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the color of this icon so
it will again be visible?

Was your quick start area dark blue before the upgrades?

If you right-click on the (almost invisible) icon, and select
properties, is there a change icon button? (This is XP-speak, but I
would expect 7 to have something similar.

Failing that, maybe you could change the color of the Taskbar.

If there's no direct way to change the color, you could try saving your
current desktop theme and temporarily creating a new one.

There's no easy way I see to find the contents of the Taskbar, such as
in the Registry, but I haven't Googled for anything...

Well, I spent a few seconds in Everything and found this:

C:\Users\My Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Too easy.

Right clicking, the context menu only shows the program name (to open
it) and unpin this program from the taskbar -- no properties. And
it's the same for 3 other programs on the quick launch. Guess Win7 is
different. Yes, the taskbar hasn't changed colors, it was dark blue.

Gene that did it. After a few tries, managed to change the icon using
the icon list and it's visible. Thank you!!! It must be a bug in
their program but since no one else has reported it they're not
interested! With that attitude, no way would I ever update to the
paid version. (the program lists 2 identical icons and I tried both)

Well, your first mistake was allowing updates; NEVER allow them;
ACTIVELY prevent, disable and kill the possibility of updates.
If you feel that you "must" do a Win update,do it manually with FULL
manual control of the COMPLETE process.
AV signatures are the ONLY thing that should be allowed, period.
I would take the safe guess that "Agent Ransack" is malware of some
type (your second mistake here).

Yes, I would guess just like windows updates, it's some sort of malware.
The original poster is correct, the icon is sort of dark, but I only
noticed after reading the post. Doesn't bother me any.

Gene,

A bit OT, but a question. I think in the past, the Notification Area
of the Taskbar (to the right), the area had a different background
color then the remainder of the Taskbar. Is that correct, and if so,
how can you restore that different color for the Notification Area so
you can see the size of it?

Thanks

I have no idea of the answer to either question.

But if you have any hidden taskbar icons, there's an upward-pointing
triangle to show the hidden items; since it is at the left end, it
delimits the Notification Area.

I have no idea how you can know what their attitude is.

For one thing, you could more easily have concluded that they don't know
about the bug, since (to quote you) "no one else has reported it".

It certainly doesn't happen on my system; maybe I should decide that
yours is the bad attitude, since only you have the problem.

*My* advice is to ignore *your* advice.
