Why?
Just installed 44 updates to WIn 7 including IE 10.
Finished it an rebooted but I had to wait until it downloaded and
installed before I could click to boot to complete the install. Why???
Why is there not a checkbox that says Automatically Boot after
successful install???

Then it just said I had more updates ... Update to IE 9. What???

MS must see that I have a MS Mouse and want me to wear it out with all
the extra clicking that I have to do to accomplish simple feats that
should only take one click.

Why can't IE have a Paste And Go in the web address box like all the
other browsers???
More clicking.

And the list goes on but I do not want to wear out my keyboard.

44 updates would seem to indicate not updating for quite some time.

There has never been (ever) a total of 44 updates deployed in a given month.

If the system was a clean install (Win7, IE8 was the default at RTM) then
their should be more than 44.

Why do you want all those MS updates?
Do you update all the hardware drivers as well?

That was the forth full update of different things in two days.
Granted the laptop has been off for a while but what the heck are they
doing with all those potential security breaches.
I thought Win 7 was fixing all the bad stuff from Win XP and Win XP
still has security updates.

If I did not update and had a problem then all would say that I must
install all those updates. It is a lose lose proposition.

I did hardware drivers before all these non-hardware drive updates
started pouring in.

The laptop manufacturer says all is up to date driver-wise.

Good point! I have to agree with that analysis.

That doesn't make sense. I update my Windows 7 computers about once a
week or so, and I haven't had more than 7 or 8 updates offered for
months. As winston said, there have never been 44 new updates offered
at once. Something is messed up with your computer.
I thought Win 7 was fixing all the bad stuff from Win XP and Win
XP still has security updates.
What does that have to do with anything? New exploits will always be
discovered, and new security updates will always be needed. There is no
such thing as a totally, eternally secure OS.

Isn't there a log somewhere, of what was installed ?

"View Update History" <--- left hand side of Windows Update

Perhaps you should review it, divide the updates into categories,
and see what you got.

If you like installing .NET libraries, then expect 20% of your updates
to involve security issues with those. Some level of .NET, comes with
the OS, cannot be removed, and is unavoidable. And some, you're "blackmailed"
into installing, such as software that won't install, unless you have
..NET 4.0 loaded.

The OS has an ever expanding attack surface - and .NET is just one
example. It's the philosophy that keeps on giving.

You would also want to check, whether some of your updates are
in a loop. Such as an update that installs over and over again.

Oops. Sorry I miscounted. There were 46 updates that day. No
duplicates. 7 were .NET updates. A few Security Essentials and
Malicious. Others were plain vanilla Security updates.

The day before there wer 4 updates.
And the day before that 5 updates.

Then almost every day before that there was one SEcurity Essentials
update with the same KB but a different (Definition 1.149.xxx.0) back
4/12 thu 7/4.

The big update took too long and even boot itself four times.
Most typically boot only once. Security Essential nonce (as in zero).

I see only one duplicate in all of the updates since 12/14/2012 when I
bought this laptop.

Are any of them for Korean or Japanese or something? You can hide
those ones forever. You can also hide Bing, Silverlight and loads of
other useless muck (unless you use and like these aberrations). Right
click on the selected update and click on "Hide". There are *loads* of
stuff you can do without, unless you *need* Korean and Japanees, Bing
and Silverlight, of course.
And thank you. Your question prompted me to have a look at my hidden
updates list (mostly Bing crud) and there was an optional for MSE
sitting waiting to be done. For some strange reason it hadn't notified
me. I manually did it. Thanks for helping make me more secure.
