program for reading newsgroups

Does anyone know a program for handling (can't think of a better word)
newsgroups that is free or pretty inexpensive? I've been using Mozilla
but don't like it.

Thunderbird is extremely customizable. Have you tried to change the
things you don't like about it?

Seconded. I've tried others but come back to Tbird.

If you don't like Thunderbird, you could try Forté Agent.
It's years since I used it but I believe it is still OK and costs about 29 USD.

There is a list here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Usenet_newsreaders

The last free Forte Agent can be downloaded here. This is a no
strings attached version. March 29, 2006.

There are many more newsreaders than are in the Wikipedia list.
But only a trivia buff would be interested in them.

Good luck,
Paul

I still use WindowsLiveMail, any version, like the way it watches
threads in the upper left hand corner.

I use Xnews, it's free, very customizable and has great support at
news.software.readers.

Get it here:

http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Download the current version, set it up and then download the 'test'
version which is the latest version, read this for the reason:

Download X-news its free and far better than Tbird. It handles Yenc and
milti posts seamlessly [unlike Tbird]- brilliant.

Funny how people's tastes differ. I quite like Thunderbird for general
email and news groups and, in fact, it's my standard program.

The latest version of WLM seems to be pretty broken. It doesn't handle
quoting at all well which means they are a lot of messy looking messages
at the moment as many users use it unfortunately.

I can't say I'm too happy with the mess WLM leaves in threads. Whether
it's the posts that start with

?

a single question mark. Or people's message body appearing after a
sig delimiter (and being grayed out). Or quoting being busted.
The fewer people using WLM, the better off we'll be.

If Google would archive this group, it would be easier to show
people what their WLM posts look like. It's pretty hard to
debate with people, when we have no common ground for examining
posts and what they look like.

Just one problem....I've never been able to cut, paste, or import a
text file that is not in unix format.

The problem I started having with it (WLM) was it started having trouble
keeping the messages strait. I would delete ones I did not want yet they
would pop back up. Sometimes several times in the same day. It would
also mark read messages un read, and often do this several times a day.
It had always done this now and then, but all of a sudden it started
doing it all the damn time. T-Bird has so far looked like an interesting
little program. Seems to be a lot to learn about it, but so far it seems
to work well, and is of course free.

You want the group alt.usenet.offline-reader or
news.software.readers.
