Installing a new Hewlett-Packard scanner.

I find that I need a scanner with general capabilities including slide
scanning and there are no drivers for W7 and my Canon D1250. I bought an
HP G4050 and have installed it successfully, not without considerable
swearing.

Windows7 does not automatically load the installation program but I did
remember that. However, the only instructions that HP supplies are
graphical and they don't indicate that scanner should not be connected
to the computer until the program tells you. The whole installation
process just hung up and HP suggested that I should download the latest
version of their software. I finally got so frustrated that I was close
to returning the damn thing to the store. However, I removed all the HP
programs and started from scratch. This time, I caught the warning not
to connect and everything went smoothly.

I think the scanner is probably going to work well tho' some of the
programmed messages are strange like it says it is "Finishing the scan
to the computer" when it has not even begun!

That seems to be typical of HP lately. Wife hates the 8500 Pro printer
I bought last year. So, I'm looking around at the other printers.

Hi, James.

Among my souvenirs I recently found a 45-year-old color 35 mm slide of my 4
grandparents. It's the only photo that can I recall of the 4 of them
together. I tried to digitize the photo by using my HP OfficeJet G55
printer/scanner/copier, but got nothing but a black blob.

I shopped several stores for a scanner that would digitize slides, with no
luck. Then, a couple of weeks ago, Office Depot had a sale on the HP
Scanjet G3110 - which has a transparency mode adapter. The price dropped
from $99.99 to $49,99. (Probably means it's about to be discontinued, but
that doesn't matter to me; I only needed it for one slide.)

Following the Quick Start instructions (just about the only documentation) I
installed the software from CD first, then connected the power and USB
cables. Wasn't long until I had the photo on my hard disk, as well as
several hard copies. ;<)

Now that I have the scanner, I've also digitized a few other slides that I
found. I'm sure that there a dozens more from my first shutterbug period
with that 35 mm camera some 50 years ago, in the 1950s, and I hope that I
can find them, too.

But I may just sell the scanner or give it away. It has already served its
purpose. To me, that one photo is worth the price of the scanner.

I do agree with you that it's very slow and the instructions are quite
confusing. But it worked for me! ;<)

Hi, GreyCloud.

My 10-year-old HP OfficeJet G55 printer/scanner/copier died last month, just
in time for HP's clearance sales on its OfficeJet 8500 series of
printer/scanner/copier/fax machines. At Office Depot, I got a new OfficeJet
Pro 8500A, regular $299.99, for $199.99 - minus $50 trade-in for the G55 -
and I like it. The only drawback I've seen so far is that it takes about 3
minutes to warm up.

Unlike the HP Scanjet G3110 that I also just got (see my reply to James),
the printed manual for the 8500 seems adequate, and there is more help
online, on the CD and on the control panel. So I'm quite happy with it so
far. (Today I even hooked up the fax; first fax I've ever had. I need to
send a fax in the next day or two, and now I'm ready.)

Wait till your wife wants a printout of her granddaughter... and then
she complains about the colors aren't quite right. What happens there
is that the iMac beachball shows up everytime she clicks on on of HPs
tools. Takes a while for the results to show up. Could very well be a
programming oversight on HPs side in regards to the G5 IBM proc.

I had a G85 for many years through 3 comps and loved it but as with all
good things it passed on.

Tried an Epson multi-function - king of the ink hogs! I bought a set of
ink refills at the local Wally World and had to call Epson the same day
because they were showing 1/2 empty after the obligatory (no you don't
have a choice) re-alignment. After I asked my wife (while talking to the
rep on the phone) if the ink was leaking out the bottom of the printer
the rep immediately offered to sent me a free set of ink refills. Yea,
they got here but I pitched them unopened along with the printer.

Retried HP - just junk now - and the software - just say 'OMG NO'! ....
RIP HP

Last summer I picked up a Kodak multi-function (ESP 5250) with free
camera. Its a good flat bed, cheap ink, WIFI that actually works and
surprisingly good prints. Camera ain't too shabby either (12MP) and
smaller than a pack of smokes. About $90USD total including a set of ink
refills that I haven't needed yet.
