Hello
With my very limited knowledge I'm trying to setup & use an old Dos base
database program, Ashton Taite's DB4 in Windows Virtual PC
Windows 7 the physical and Windows X P Pro the virtual machine
I've got X P working OK but despite instigating the usual changes required i
config.nt to run DB4 in X P it just won't run

config.nt added entrie
files=10
buffers=2

I've attempted adding additional drivers & command lines in both the hos
& guest systems without positive results but I'm not really sure what I'
doing
Would appreciate any & all help available
Thanks

Did you ever try it under the real XP? As if it won't run under XP
itself I don't see much hope under W7 and virtual XP. DOSBox might be
worth a shot.

Are we talking a DOS based program? If so then why under XP? Instead
just create a DOS virtual machine or perhaps 98SE or even Win3.1?

dBase IV, you mean? Google for the free "DOS Box", which I use to
run my dBase IV program on 64-bit Windows 7, and which in fact was
recommended to me in this very newsgroup.

The program may be checking the OS version. Try using the sever
command....

Tried DosBox and apart from a few initial teething problems have got it working
well.
I use version 0.74 myself for running WordStar 2000 under Windows
XP. I have not tried it under Windows 7 yet.
Have three continuing problems that you or some one in this forum may be able
to
help with
1. Is it possible to set system variables in DosBox & if so How?
Yes, with the set command:

Syntax Example
------ -------
Set value:
set <var>=<value> set var=the value for var

Delete variable:
set <var>= set var=

List all environment variables:
set set

Output one variable's value:
set <var> set var
In some CLIs (not DOSBox), this will output all variables whose names
start with what is specified.
2. Is it possible to increase the DosBox window apart from using full screen?
I have never done anything in this area.
3. If a PATH=%PATH%;[added path list] is added to the DosBox config file, does
it work?
Yes. Make sure that it is the correct file.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

I didn't know you are a WordStar user Gene?
