Most likely a setting in your browser.
Or a firewall could have your browser blocked.
If you're on a router, check those settings too.

Are you using a router? If so have you connected the machine directly to
the Internet connection to see if the problem follows?

I'd guess it's a wireless connection, yes? And then I'd say choose
"repair connection" under the assumption that the connection is messed up.
Except for one thing; you can get gmail.
But, that could just be from the cache store. Unless, of course, you can
send and receive mail from it.

When I access gmail.com, it ends up being an "HTTPS" connection. So
maybe that hints at something ?

Are you using Internet Explorer, or some other browser software ?

Perhaps your browser is using a proxy ?

You don't say which browser you're using, so it's probably some
version of IE. Look for malware or a misconfigured proxy. Try to
access a website by its IP address. Open a Command Prompt window and
try to ping one or more Internet IP's. Narrow the problem down to just
the browser or to the entire OS. Try a different browser.

Lots you can do. Those were just some random thoughts.

I think Gmail requires an SSL connection thus the HTTPS
Clear the DNS cache for grins
Check the hosts file for weird entries
Disable AV, ZONE ALARM, etc
Disable Windows firewall

Gmail requires none of that. Although few people realize it, gmail
works just fine with any e-mail client, and as far as I'm concerned,
should almost always be used that way. Doing e-mail with an e-mail
client is far easier and faster than on the web.

To me the only exception is when you are traveling and need to use a
public computer for mail.

I'd agree.

Would you care to share the settings (server names, port numbers if not
standard, is it POP3 or the other one, does it do secure authentication
[presumably not if you can't use it anywhere], and so on)?

There's a page here. I didn't even know this existed :)

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12103

"On the Server Settings tab in the Account Settings window, do the following:

* Change the Port: to '995'
* Under User secure connection:, select SSL
* Verify that the box next to Leave messages on server is unchecked, then click OK.

Congratulations! You're done configuring your client to send and retrieve
Google Apps email messages."

So the word "SSL" is in there. I was looking in the Thunderbird 2 section,
which is the client I'd be using.

There's all sorts of junk in there.

Sorry, I don't remember any of the details. But you can find them on
the GMail web site.
