blue screen and "system service exception"

Over the past few months I've been getting a lot of blue screens with the message "system service exception". When it happens I get the blue screen after reboot maybe 5 or 6 times in a row, but then I finally luck out and my computer loads normally. The last time I had the bundle of blue screens, I had a weird black screen come up after wanting to scan my C drive for "inconsistencies". It scared me so I opted out and it eventually disappeared. I noticed that it often happens when I plug or unplug my printer, webcam, or sd card, though it doesn't happen every time I use these things. I got the blue screen once when I merely clicked the "remove safely" icon on my bottom toolbar. I have seen others post their crash dump files in the forums, but I tried to bring them up and it said I wasn't authorized. I am not very computer savvy, so I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with this! I am a graduate student about to graduate and am wondering if I should take my last opportunity at a new, educationally priced laptop or if my current one is salvagable.

Boot into Safe Mode by constantly pressing F8 key on keyboard during startup. Scroll down to Safe Mode and select it. In Safe Mode type cmd into the Start Menu's search box, at the top right-click on cmd.exe and select Run As Administrator. In the Command Prompt window that opens type sfc /scannow. If you have anymore bsod's after doing that, open up Compuuter, double click on C: drive and type minidump in the Search Box. Right lick on any files in the minidump folder and select Send To > Compressed9 (zipped) Folder save them on your Desktop and Attach them to this thread by clicking on the parclip, so someone here can examine them. Also, search your pc maker's website for updated driver's and update those as needed.

Thanks so much for responding! I ran the scan and it said that no "integrity violations" were found. I tried to zip the minidump files but it keeps telling me I don't have permission. I even tried to put them on windows live and it wouldn't work. I'm just not very computer savvy so I'm not sure what else to try if anyone can offer further directions for this.

I installed driver updates a while back when the problem first started happening, but have had blue screens since. I am not sure if it's related, but the volume on my computer sometimes freezes up when I change it and the computer will not play audio or video files until I reboot.

Try copying the dump files into a folder on your desktop, then zip that and attach.

OK Houston, we have a problem!

What you did beckymw, is you went to C:\Windows\system32. You then r-clicked the mindump folder and selected Send To... Desktop.

That has made a shortcut to yours, and now its on my PC, my minidump folder. For which I Thank You. I wanted a shortcut to Minidumps :)

GoTo C:\Windows\System32 then open your minidump folder, press Ctrl + A or highlight all the .dmp files with your mouse.

R-click on an actual .dmp file, select copy.

GoTo your desktop and open the new folder you've created or create one now, r-click in that folders open window and select paste. You should now have the .dmp files in a folder on your desktop.

Zip that and attach to a post.

At the same time see this thread: Important! Every thread starter please see.

Sorry about that, it didn't seem right at the time but I wasn't sure what else to try. I've done what you suggested and attached that zip file, but when I open them they don't come out looking comprehensible (not that they would be to me anyway if they looked the way I expected them to).

I also read the post you attached but am not sure I understand how to get to the CPU-Z screen and couldn't figure it out. Again, I apologize, but I don't have that natural tech ability, which is why I'm here to begin with I suppose...

The latest crash dump I found in your archive is almost 2 months old. So, I can't be sure of the state of your pc as of right now. The problem of your blue screens comes from outdated drivers. Go to your notebook support to download as many updates as it will offer you.

1. Uninstall McAfee 2009 and temporarily replace it with MSE:

After you update the drivers and the system runs smoothly without crashes, feel free to install the LATEST version of McAfee.
