Thanks very much for the information.
I have two thick manuals published by Microsoft Press but neither of them
mention shadow copies.
I did find some information on-line which enabled me to list the shadow
volumes and to view the contents of the files - but nothing about excluding
certain folders of deleting existing content.
However I have just found what looks to be a useful utility. This is
East-Tec Eraser 2010.Available from here:-
www.east-tec.com/consumer/eraser
Primarily it is one of those privacy tools that cleans up personal data and
securely deletes files.
In addition it has a Volume Shadow Copy Manager tool which can be set to
exclude personal files. It can also securely delete existing volumes.
I shall give it a try, and hope that it doesn't wreck my Win7 installation.
