I'm afraid it's both non-intuitive and well hidden!
It looks like individual tasks don't have a separate history file, you have
to delete all histories with the Event Viewer.
Event Viewer
Application and Service logs
Microsoft
Windows
Task Scheduler
Operational
In the right pane 'Clear log'.

Ye Gods, you're right on both counts! It certainly is hidden well.
I look at event viewer on a regular basis, but haven't delved into all the
categories listed. I'd have to put aside a day a week to go through all
that, LOL!!
