Strange start-up message

For the past week, I get a warning tone and the following message everytime I power my computer:

"Users\..........applData\Roaming\openCandy\openCandy_35........\openCandy Dlm.dll. Access denied.

-I dont know what it means. I lent my notebook to a friend exactly about the time the issue started. Is it possible he installed something? is it a virus? I have tried everithing, anti-virus scan, registry defrag and all that to no avail. Apart from the message irritating me exceedingly, I fear that my system may be in danger. Can somebody help?

You must have installed something that uses Open Candy to install the application. What was it your friend installed during the time this error started to occur?

In other words someone installed adware, maybe even a toolbar, etc. Unless it is required for some program you really need I would suggest you get rid of it. I'm not familiar with that particular product but many of them can slow down your computer because they can download ads etc that waste your bandwidth.

Thanks Trainable Man. Since I was informed in the forum that it is not a virus, I am relieved. But apart from the irritation, I can swear my system has actually slowed down. Any ideas about removing it?

Remove Adware.OpenCandy , Removal Guide

1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Windows Task Manager. Then stop all Adware.OpenCandy processes.

2. Click on the Processes tab, search for Adware.OpenCandy then right-click it and select End Process key.

3. Click Start button and select Run. Type regedit into the box and click OK to proceed.

4. Once the Registry Editor is open, search for the registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Adware.OpenCandy.” Right-click this registry key and select Delete.

5. Search for file like %PROGRAM_FILES%\ Adware.OpenCandy\ Adware.OpenCandy and delete it manually.

I believe Malwarebytes may also take care of it. Download and install Malwarebytes and then reboot your machine and run it in safe mode (hit F8 as it starts up until you get a menu, then choose safe mode).

Links to Malwarebytes can be found in our Freeware DB.

EDIT: Clifford's info seems more specific to Open Candy so it may be best to try that first.

Why should anybody vend what you can not remove from your system? I have tried all the suggestions from the forum. The "Candy thing" is giving me real nightmeres.

Why? Simple, because they make money. They don't care if you have to read ads. Sites add toolbars all the time to feed you ads so they make money. And many of these things work similar to a virus because they don't want them to be removed easily.

Even so, if you boot up into safe mode and follow Clifford's instructions carefully and then for good measure run a scan with malwarebytes then you should be able to remove it.

Hi everyone!

We have investigated this issue and believe it is related to part of the OpenCandy recommendation system that has experienced an unexpected error condition when it was run.

The OpenCandy recommendation system may have been part of a software installer that you recently ran. It is used by developers to recommend additional software products during their installation process, and if you accepted such an offer our download manager would have been invoked temporarily to help download it for you. After the download manager finishes, it is designed to clean up after itself, but in this case an error has prevented it from removing a scheduled task.

Rest assured that no harm has been done, and that the error message you see is simply alerting you that the system is trying to start our download manager to complete a download after you restarted your computer, but our download manager has already removed itself from your system. All that you need to do is remove the scheduled task that is attempting to start the download manager when you start your computer. To make this easy for anyone to fix, we've created a new tool that solves the problem automatically.

Simply download and run the tool and choose "Yes" when it asks if it should "Remove orphaned OpenCandy tasks?". This operation will take only seconds to complete and afterwards you should receive no more error messages from RunDLL32. The tool is available for download here: http://oclink.us/ocdlmhf1
