Speed up boot time?

HI,

my new laptop (iCore 5 with W7 Home Premium 64 bit) has a boot time that is too long, it stays on the "welcome" screen for 30".

My startup programs are reduced to minimum and windows search service is already disabled.
I still have to install Office 2010!

I read somewhere there is an issue with desktop background colors, so I switched it with a picture, nothing changed.

In the event viewer, performance and diagnostic I see errors, like event ID 100 or 101, but read on the web that even MS have no clou why of those errors, but essentially they can be ignored.

Ideas?

If you have a new laptop, it's probably all the crapware that's been installed on there by the PC maker.

I suggest you download PC Decrapifier and run it then choose what programs you don't need and use it to eliminate them.

It probably has either McAfee or Norton or Symantec AV programs on it. Get rid of those too.

All that crapware will really slow down your system.

Try it and see what happens.

Also defrag your hard drive with Defraggler to get it working smoothly and download CCleaner to get rid of junk and temp files too. CCleaner is a free program and many of us use it here.

I already did at the beginning what you have recommended, funny because I use the same sw you mentioned, except for defrag, I'm on Auslogics.

Well, in the meantime I have installed Office 2010 and the good thing is that the boot time remained the same, again I am on 30 sec. for the "Welcome" screen only, the total boot time, from the moment I push the button to the moment the PC is fully operable is 90 sec.

AV: I use Avast and will stay with that 'cause I like it and never a problem.
FW: I am with the native windows one for the time being, but I will switch to Comodo because I've been using it for years on my other PCs, again never a problem but I am aware it will further slow down my booting time.

You know, I can live with 90 sec. but I think an iCore 5 with 6GB RAM should boot up quicker.
True, I use Aero with a couple of gadgets and I do not want to give up because I like them and I think the "welcome" screen is before the aero goes in??

If you have additional suggestion, they are very welcome!

Alex, that's because great minds think alike! LOL!

Does the Auslogics Disk Defrag app have a Boot Defrag option? That may help.

I use Raxco's PerfectDisk, which I have had since 2003, it's never let me down yet.

This always happens with a plain (simple) color for your desktop, rather than a design or picture, but is often reported with any backgoround..

But you can fix quite a bit of the delay like this:

1. The hard way!
I have found that this is because the Windows 7 default is not correctly addressed. and this is what I have found works for me.

a. If you are selecting the picture from the windows offers, you will find them all in Windows - Web - Wallpaper. Otherwise, select the one you
want, from whatever source you personaly are using. You can touch it up, or whatever you wish to do, with your favourite graphics program.
b. When you are ready, copy it and paste it into a temp folder. Rename it TranscodeWallpaper.jpg
c. Now go to Users - username - Appdata - roaming - Microsoft - Windows - Themes
d. Rename the file there as TranscodeWallpaper1 (or similar) .jpg. Copy you new chosen wallpaper to the folder. Log off and on and you should find
a great deal of the delay has gone.
Windows is now seeing it as it's default path.

2. Not so hard.

a. Type regedit (Please make a reg backup before messing with the registry)
in RUN or startmenu search box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.

b. Now go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
c. In right-side pane, create a new DWORD value DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set its value to 5

d. Log off or restart your system and your problem should be (partially) solved.

Make sure your BIOS settings are correct...
