A router is something that can setup an internet connection, network AND can connect to a network

A USB adapter is something that can connect to an network but a router is better than a usb adapter.

Hi nooblet404 - Welcome to w7forums

If you only have one PC at home the modem is usually all you need.

A Network Switch will allow you to connect several computers together depending on the amount of ports available.

A Network Router will do the same with the addition of a "WAN Connector" which allows you to connect to the Internet through your modem. A router will store your login name and password for your ISP(Internet Service Provider) to connect to the Internet.

Some modem's come with router functionally and if enabled will conflict with a Network Router. If you set your modem to function as the router. You can use a Network Switch for your home network.
